Title: Drag Night Gcvw 2005
Post by: James Buchan on August 20, 2005, 12:25:53 AM
WOW what a turn out!!! I think from my memory it was one of the biggest that I have seen - congrats to all that ran!

Also a big shout out to all that just came out to support - kudos to you!

I also would like to thank my pit crew, cheerlead squad and parts pimp - I wouldn't have done as well as I did without you guys/girls.

Look for a big update on the Airspeed sponsored ACTop20 after this weekend with a big write-up/review of the entire weekend!

Note to self - driving home at 50 MPH on the freeway in the bug is not a fun trip = my ears are ringing!

I can hardly wait for the updates and more info.  I was watching on the web cam on 4 different windows, I saw James run against Brian, but missed who won, Tom kick some ass, and a ton of other beetles dominating.  I'm sure the import crowd will figure it out soon that beetles rock and are fast.

Way to go, This makes up for not being there.  How many beetles/vans  raced?

I gotta agree, what an awesome night!!! I think there had to be at least 10-12 bugs that actually raced (mine was there but unfortunately did not race!) ...and with those that raced there were some kick-@$$ times!! Mid 11's...Low 12's... :o  Like you said, definantly good enough for the import and even domestic V8 crowd to sit back and appreciate!! Whose car was it that broke on the line though, and did anything actually break?? Axle??? Anyhow, awesome night, great to see all the aircooled turnout and am looking forward to tomorrow's show. (unfortunately could not make it to Airspeed's show today....working!  :( )
Cheers to all!!  B)

that was loads of fun.

congrats to bruce tweds for breaking 12's in that 54. it was cool to see darren run consistent mid 11's. also cool to see was the split bus from victoria busting a 16.91.

great to see toms split tearing it up. cool car.

i'm pretty sure alan had tranny & throttle cable troubles on his last run. hopefully nothing major.

great turnout, met some cool folks from the prairies, and had a blast shooting the s#!t with the people there.  B)

Big thanks to Chris for towing me home, James for driving his car home so Chris could tow me and Shane for letting us use his truck!

The first two passes for me sucked as the MSD was shorting out and only reving to 5500rpm. Last round for me James 2 lent me his coil and Wham!!!!! it ran like a charm and broke the main shaft. Video will be up soon. Anyone get any other vid of me blowing up the trans?

James  did you switch to slicks for the final rounds?

Nice times.  What were your 1/8 mile times?

I will be running 1/8 mile next weekend in Kelowna if everything goes well...just for comparison.

Yup I ran Geoff slicks after his tranny called it a night.

My 60' went from 2.1-2.3's down to 1.8-1.7's with them

Not sure what my 1/8th was I'll look when I get home tonight.

The track was HOT until the last 2 runs - traction sucked ass when we first got there.

Kevin, remember to lean out your carb when you go there, it's at 4000' elev.

What's the schedule of events there?  I'll be up that way then.

oh, wow, James, and I had all sorts of ear plugs in my tool box..................

Yup! the drags were a big kick in the gas. Sure was a fun pass when Alan and I were pretty much door to door the whole 1/4 (now if I could just cut a light!   )

I just down loaded the data log from my last pass, the wild ride. Those LM1s are just too kool. I can see my tyre slip in 1st gear when the car turned right! And I can also see more HP coming, the AFR was 11.2 @ 6500 and fattened up  to 10.1 @ 8k  . Big room for improvement  ;) . That is now  the most important tool I have for engine tuning. Good thing Airspeed stocks them.

Absolutely a fantastic selection of parts at Airspeed, you guys up there are spoiled to have such a variety of high quality parts locally stocked. Keep it up, Jim and Geoff.

Dang that is what I was afraid of.  This SU carb I have is a pain to tune.  The needle has to be sanded to a specific taper to suit the engine.  Friday night is the street legals, Saturday, and Sunday are racing King of the hill  and time only, I was thinking of going up on Saturday to do time only.  I just hope I can get all the little things done by then. I have a nasty backfire out the carb and it keeps blowing off the carb/turbo conector.  I think one of my chromoly pushrods is too tight.  I set them up to just spin freely with no backlash.  It is random when it happens. Timing is close at appox 10-12 degrees, It may also be lean.  I was thinking of being up there for 10:00.  I'll have to see.  Worse case scenario is to catch the next batch of racing Sept 17.  I also have to take out the oil pump, and re-seal, it is leaking between the pump and case many drops a minute while running.  I don't see a gasket there, only between the cover and the pump, so this is something else I missed.

I agree , the LM1 is a must.. People kept saying to me..too rich, too rich.. The LM1 told me, too lean at 6500..14.0 +. As Doug Berg said, the engine will tell you what it wants, not the other way around.  Alan U, Geoff and myself can do 109 MPH passes on pump gas because we run Kroc heads and LM1's.
