So it has been raining everyday here with 1 hour breaks in between rain bursts, I am doing all my body work outside and it really sucks. I am determined to get this done for the Great Canadian even though we have company booked to visit every weekend till sept. Every guy visiting knows they will be helping finish it if they want to or not.
So far I have cut up 2 pans, 1 from a super with irs, and one swing pan. I am using the frame head from the swing to mount to the super pan to get an irs pan. Yes it is alot of work but what the heck. I just have to trim 1/8\" off my cuts to get the right dimensions so everything will line up. Once that is done I am going to mount it to the body, then weld it together. The super pan is different from about 10\" infront of the pan head so this is where the offset lap joint is. It is not only the frame head that is obviously different on a super but the tunnel too.
The only part on my engine that has had any work done to it has been the heads which were ported way back in Feb, and only last week milled the intake sealing surface for flanges. I still have to install valve guides and do a valve job and cut the bosses for dual springs. The engine is going to be a turbo 1600 singleport for now with a cam similar to a 110 and a counterweighted crank using stock pistons. I will see how many pounds boost stock pistons will handle. I have 16 cylinder/pistons to work with.
The car needs the frame head finished, the doors still contoured to follow the chop, all the glass/plexi done, gas line, brake lines, electrical done, a turbo system fabed up, and many misc things completed, and only 6 weeks to do it all. Yahoo.

If you can get that done for the GCVWS I think you should get some sort of award. I know how long it takes to do all that stuff, Good luck!

I put 15 / 16 lbs to 87mm pistons back in the 80's on chevron premium LEADED.
old used 1641 with bugpack 4063 cam- untouched 041 heads- home made header and intake - b40(I think) rajay- 45 weber side draft - NO WASTEGATE! - stock tranny- stock clutch- stock 62 beetle best et 13.2 @ 101 mph(while the clutch & tranny held)
Same motor now with used 92mm pistons then made about 18 lbs(race fuel still no wastegate) and in a light bug with slicks and close gears = high 11's @ 109 mph

The pan is welded, thank goodness for a engine hoist with a good reach, it sure makes taking the body on and off very easy with 1 person, and the brakes are almost done, no line lock for now ( need to hurry maybe I'll still install it if there is time later), disks in the front and larger wheel cylinders in the rear,and larger master cylinder. Just need hard line from master cylinder to the rear through tunnel or under the car, and from rear wheels to rubber lines. Next will be running a new gas line then fitting the trans with bracing, putting in the shocks and the body can go back on. Everything takes soo long re-using old parts, taking everything apart and making it work like new again, I guess it is an accomlishment though, rather than buying new mexican parts..
What is the rulling from the track about using older tires? I have 2 bias ply fronts that are skinnies 4\" and would like to use them , but they have very minor crackes on the side walls.
I allready know I am short some door screws, I have 2 parts cars and no door screws.... figures.

Hey I have one of those Bugpack 4063 cams on my shelf!
I will be using a 4062, which should be good to 6500 rpm. It is not a turbo cam, but it is what I have sitting on my shelf. This year i am being cheap to see if my heads work, then if it is ok then I'll upgrade.

I only ran that stuff because it was what I had too. A lot of fun for next to nothing . Don't forget a deep sump though.

Well the weather has been better. The pan is done, I just have to attach the axles, the heads are almost done, have to cut the valve bosses for dual springs, and flycut the cylinder sealing surface, new guides and valves with a multi angle valve job are done, every step involves making up tools to complete something on the heads, which eats up time. Now to put the body back on and contour the doors to the chop, plexi glass, and get my engine torn apart to figure out what is needed. then on to the turbo and tuning.
I think it is going to be very close for time.

I've got a BP 4063 in my N/A (IDA's) 'race' 1879cc engine...as a 1775 it ran 14.9 in one of my heavier cars...hopefully it stops breaking tranny's and I get a time on it in the current configuration...I just got the engine back in today after putting in an 8-bolt 4.375 R&P and a spool...she'll chirp my AA traction rated 215's on the 2/3 shift.

Oh my 2 working days left....GULP...... It is raining right now. This is going to suck if it rains tomorrow. I have abit of work to do still, install windows, seat tracks, all electrical, finish doors, bleed brakes, start and tune engine, and what ever else I am forgeting. I am not looking forward to tuning the engine, The SU carb is not an easy one to do quickly, especially with a turbo. I may only end up boosting 7 pounds since this is what the waste gate is set up for right now, and I don't have time to make up a boost controller. We'll see, if there is time I'll do it, I seemed to have time for the line lock. I just remembered my timing light packed it in, crap.
I don't think I am going to post any pictures, everyone can wait.
It is going to be so close to having it done to......lay some SINGLEPORT ASS WHOOOOOPIN!!!!!!

Here I sit fighting now with a a flooding carb at only 1 pound of pressure, and the holley reg with the adjusting screw completely out. Engine hasn't been started yet, windows have to go in still, and lots of misc stuff, and some sort of seat brackets have to be welded in, and the carb tuned. I hope I can beat the clock. I have to try a weaker spring in the regulator.

I just came to the conclusion, I can't make it. Another 5 - 7 hours would be awsome, then I could get the engine going. My flooding was cured by changing from a 5/16\" fuel line to a 3/16\" fuel line. I know this will bite me later once the power level goes up but ohwell, that is for next year.
I am very disapointed, 4 months of busting myself working ridiculous hours to be ready , only to be short by a few hours.
Have a great weekend everybody, this is a no show for me. My 1st just to clarify to some people.

Well got the car running, It sounds REALLY mean ( if power could be judged by sound this should be good) and the turbo spooling up is quite cool sounding, this was the highlight of the morning, huge grin from me, my wife was happy, the kids were excited, but I think I just went to an all time low. To see oil dripping heavly out the rear of the engine was a new meaining to \"THIS SUCKS\". Could be a rear main seal? It was brand new probably not, since I am very careful of installing, and oiling it up so it won't burn, Or a cracked case? Since this block was used, and I remember being told it leaked oil out the rear, I checked the rear area closly looking for cracks before choosing the case to build up on, I will think it is a cracked case though, since cracks can be missed. The oil galley was tapped/plugged, so it is not a loose plug. Grrrr and I was wanting to race next Friday at Kelowna 1/8 mile. The case is an as41 mexican and has standard cut. When it rains it pours. :(

Sorry to here about the oil leak.
I highly recommend doing a penetrant test on every engine case prior to rebuild, especially a used case. I have found so many that were porous in the front webbing near cyl #3, and some that were cracked in areas you would not believe. I have also x-rayed some of the newer aftermarket heads and found aero bar in the exhaust guide areas.
Some years ago, I tested several NEW welded and stroked VW cranks that rung like a bell when you hit them with a hammer, but were cracked on both cheek side radii on every rod journal!
If you don't test it, you will find out later. In your case, it manifested itself into an oil leak. Some find out after the engine grenades.

Whahoo, Well I am creating my own fun since I'm not there right now, my big up for the day is finding my rear main seal shreaded, and realizing my new seal was the old one, and the new one was still sitting in the package on the assembly table beside the bearing box, how...what the....ohwell, fooobar on me, new one is in, motor will be started again tonight.

Well so many thing have happened, this car has been sitting since the middle of Aug, I had to get this on the road just so I didn't go mental from walking by every day. I have decided to put it under the tarp for now till next spring since there is to many things to do before the snow flies. BUT before I did I had to drive it just to let my mind be at ease. No front windows, seat belts, and I'm sitting on a block of wood.
This video is of the first time driving it. I actully laid some rubber with such a pathetic launch, my wife showed the crack in the road though after. I can't rev past 5000-5300 because of the throttle linkage is at the wrong ratio, I saw 2 pounds in 2nd gear so far, but shut it down about 3500 rpm since I did not want to be going faster where I was doing this in the gravel parking lot.
So it will be awhile till my next singleport post next spring. But I will get it on the track next year

Launching with a 4 puck and a 7 pound flywheel is abit tricky, I can hardly wait till next year to really spend the time tuning. The winter is going to go by slow forsure.

here is 1 more video of me revin the engine. I did this to see when the smoke I was seeing was happening. It looks like the turbo is getting to much oil. I curently have it being fed through a 1/16 \" hole, but that seems to be to large. Or the new center section carbon seal is toast allready, which could happen, but not likely. On going by engine sound when accelerating it still seems lean by the slight poping I am hearing, so I would rule out being rich down low. Up high 4000+ it seems good. And since this engine is race only, once the bugs are worked out it should pull right to 6500-7000 under boost, ...rich is good then.
The engine sounds good for being a 1600 singleport.
I should also add the SU carb makes the engine rev slower than with a reg carb. The butterfly is wide open but the venturi piston doesn't rise until it sees enough vacuum to pull it up, and there is no accelerator pump squirt. I would love to see how this engine revs with a regular carb that has a accelerator pump. I'm sure it would be much faster with the 7 pound flywheel it has. Even though it revs pretty quick.

We'll.. I have decided to ditch the 2\" SU carb for this year since I allready know I don't have much time allready and it is only winter, most likely I won't be able to make anything happen, but this is for just in case.
I will use a dellorto sidedraft, since tuning is very quick.
My SU took a whole day of tuning ....starting ...backfiring, take it apart.. tapering the needle, trying it again ...backfiring, taking it apart...tappering the needle, putting it back in ...backfiring...to where it is now which is still way lean..Horay no backfiring now...just lots of hesitation. And a blown carbon seal because of the backfiring. If I had this dellorto in the begining I'm sure it would be close allready for being jetted, I have dellorto jets galore.
Anyway I hope this year works for getting the car out to the track. Atleast the car is mostly done, could use paint too, but orange, blue and grey is a cheap color scheme. With stock pistons I won't be going faster than a 13 forsure. If everything works out with my heads then I will bump the motor size up for the following year. Then I will be looking for 11's. which in my car that weighs 1400 lbs I would need approx 210 hp and slicks . Not a far stretch but a stretch forsure since this will be from a singleport.

2 years later and another update...
The Ginch Pincher is no more...The car is now the Gaunch Launcher, with nice Huge lettering to go on the doors
The engine is not what it used to be, still a singleport but much larger now it is a 2110. Brothers machine did up the engine longblock with lots of extra's in the engine, I missed the GC last year as this longblock arived 2 weeks before the GC, and our work was so busy I just could not get any time to finish eveything else. So now over the Christmas holiday I was able to put in a few days to get the car closer to being ready to race again. The car has to be put away not completed again, but work is more important as usual. So I just have to finish the little stuff, wiring in the wideband and hooking up the rest of the electrical and vacuum lines. Ohya and the carb linkage. Then send the car away for a roll bar or cage, not sure which one yet, my car with me in it was 1750 so allready it is heavy, and am not sure what the future for my car will be in times I want to be running. This engine was built to make 360+ hp which would put me into the low 10's and wanting a cage forsure. Also for now I don't want to be a boost hog and run huge boost, only 8 - 10 pounds , which is what my wastegate spring is.
Anyway here is a rear shot of the engine for now.

afaik, if you want to run anything under an 11.5 you need a cage. i could be wrong tho.
but f@#k 10's. that thing will run a 9 fo sho. i cant wait to see you boost it up and run a 8. ;)
