I'm not running heat and I want to ditch the outlet ducts on my shroud for a cleaner look. Have a good original shroud and i'm wondering if instead of buying an aftermarket one w/o outlets (heard bad things about cheapies cooking motors) can I chop the ducts off mine and skin it in sheet metal. Will this screw up the airflow direction inside??? Anyone done this?

There are 3 or 4 spot welds that hold the outlets in place. I had to grind a couple of high spots on the shroud it's self where the metal is rolled up a bit. Made templates to fit into the holes and welded them in.
I haven't had any heating issues with my 1915 and i run 9.5:1

1973 Type 181 (aka Thing) shroud. No fresh air outlets.

Cool thanks guys. Are thing shrouds hard to find? Hey 65type1 is that a mallory dist you're running in that pic? If so how do you like it, did you buy locally? how muchy??

The Thing shrouds are fairly hard to find, and are usually not cheap when they turn up. I have one on my 1835 engine. I find it to cool great, and has a way cleaner look. I have heard that the inside around the heater outlets is slightly different between the type 181 and regular DH shrouds... I believe I saw this posted somewhere on STF. Can't confirm this forsure however.

The 1973 Thing shroud is one year only. don't confuse it with a 40hp which doesn't have fresh air and is NOT a dog house shroud.
Prices are usually around $200 for one in decent condition.

Some industrial shrouds don't fresh air vents either .I have one here that doesn't That's the only reason why I know

200 usd hmmm I'll sell my industrial one for 15 cdn but the coil clamp nut serts are pulled out :D

I picked mine up for $100 Canadian 2 years ago at the GCVWS :P I highly doubt that deal will come around again.

On the back , little \"dog house\" for oil cooler sticking out of the back.
Just flat on the back =.......not a \" dog house\" style shroud

If so then it's probably a non fresh air 40 hp shroud.
It's the later dog house shroud from 1600 dual ports that
everyone wants

I think I'll just play around with the one I have, I want the super clean look without all the notches and coil mounting holes, yada yada. Gonna hand it over to a sheet metal buddy to skim the whole front/ top of it. I was thinking about the airflow with and without the outlets, would without direct more air over the cylinders=better cooling???

I read this somewhere before, once you have the outlets off , look down inside the hole. You should see that the air flow is blocked from going to the heads forcing it out the heater outlets. Cut a hole so that the air can blow down on the heads and not just be totaly blocked once you fill the outlets. Apparently the thing shroud has something like this. Maybe Glenn can confirm this?

I've never taken a Thing shroud apart, but i've also heard that the internal vanes are different. And simply plugging or even removing the fresh air outlets cause internal turbulance and cooling is not a good at a real 73 Type 181.
