We got the tranny apart no problem.
Anyone know how to get it back together, we are having a little difficulty. IE we can not get it back together?
-
Righty tighty.
At what stage of assembly are you?
-
We got all the parts out with a little difficulty, cleaned it all up and re set up all the gears.
Right now we can not get the gears back into the housing. Most people are telling us we need a special tool that holds the gears together while you insert them into the housing.
I hope there is another way as I do not really want to pay someone to put it back together.

Do you mean you set up the gear clearances on the shafts? Or you set up the shift forks in a jig ? What can't you get , the shafts into the intermediate housing or the shafts and intermediate housing assembly into the main case ? Do you have a Bentley manual? (if not get one!!)
What are you working on?
Why did you have it apart?
What area are you in?
Let us know.

1) the tranny was taken apart as a project for BCIT
2) we can not get the gears to stay in position while we close the main case
3) we are in Maple Ridge
4) the vehicle is a 1968 bug, with a '74 California engine
We are working on the mechanical bits first, we have the engine rebuilt with a Porche profile cam, brakes are done awaiting a master cylinder, transmission, a work in process, we have the heater channels and floor pans should do that in Sept? Once it is mechanically sound, then the wiring needs doing and then body work.
Hope that answers all the questions

The Bentley says to use a heavy rubberband to hold the pinion and main drive shaft together when you push everything into the gear carrier.

So simple, excellent thanks for the help

The Bentley says to use a heavy rubberband ....
Duct tape works well also. Red Green would be proud!
