Title: Cooling Fan Options.

Aloha,

I recently saw a couple of photos over on the Samba of Beetles equipped with 356 Porsche Carrera cooling fans, and one even had a \"flat\" fan on top of the block.  Where can you get these wonderful toys?  Most of the photos were of VW's in Europe.  I think most of the engines were T-4's, but there must be a way to get them to fit T-1's as well.

I have the photo saved on my computer, but I don't know how to post it.

The flat 911 style fan although it looks cool, looses a bunch of HP due to the pulleys and belt configuration. But it looks very cool!

the ultimate in Holy crap apeal would be the same set-up with a flywheel driven fan through a gear arrangement , get rid of the distributor, crank pulley and carbs. Use a flywheel fired ignition  Put in a turbo under the package tray with fuel injection and have the piping go directly into the ports from under the package tray as close as posible to the heads.
all you would see is the 2 pipes to the heads, a shroud and fan blade.

I may have to accomplish this feat before I die.

Thanks for posting the pic Bill.

Geoff, I agree that it would lose a lot of HP through the pulleys and stuff...but it DOES look pretty sweet.  Think it would fit in a T-3?

Here is another way to do it with a corvair set-up  This guy races his 914 and sees 7-8000 rpm all day at the track and he has won many years points total.  His motor is a 1.8 liter T4 and is pushing 160 hp.

Aloha,

That's a pretty cool setup, but has anyone seen how to adapt a Carrera 4-cam fan onto a VW T-1?  I've seen a couple of them around, but I can't find the photos anywhere.

To bad you are in Hawaii,  there is a spyder replica in Langley that has that fan on a T4 motor, it would not be hard to put it onto a T1.

There may be a picture on the net of that car, from the supershifters website, I will check it out and post it.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for posting that link.  Is that fan shroud a 911 shroud or a Carrera one?  A friend of mine down here has a Spyder replica and I've been trying to convince him to switch from the 36hp shroud to the 911 version.  Those Spyders are wicked fast, man.

The shroud is a carrera shroud with the correct fan installed.  I'm not sure if the shroud is origional porsche or if they ever made a carrera fan shroud  for a T4 but it uses the carrera fan assembly , and it is formed from metal, not fiberglass.  If it is a hand made shroud to fit the carrera fan then WOW....... It matches the rest of the car..Awsome!

This car is a piece of art, I have never seen quality like this before, and I drool every time I go in and see it there.

Dario, One of our friends is working on the 4 cam Carrera style shroud kits for the T1 engine. We have seen many of the parts as they were being built and supplied him with some of the gen and alt for the proyotype. There is pic's and posts on this somewhere on the shop talk forum. Not cheap but a great looking product!

For what its worth www.germanlook.com has an article in their tech section that compares the cooling effectiveness of a 911 kit on a T1 versus other cooling systems.
