Post by: Stevie on May 23, 2005, 10:27:41 PM
alright,

i installed a 3 inch narrowed beam, and caster shims into my 73 beetle, but now my steering wheel sits about 1/2\" away from the base... is there a way to adjust this out at all? like rotating the steering box on the beam. someone must of had this problem before, please help my horn wont work and my turn signals don't stop automaticly.

how did others fix this problem??

thanks a lot steve

Base of what? The steering column?

In that case did you take the column apart at the bottom (closest to steering box) - make sure it is on enough there.

Otherwise on the doughnut (round rubber piece that goes between the column and box) make sure you have the bolts in a cross pattern - the steering box T and column T don't directly mate, the are 90Deg from each other in a X pattern

and finally check that your steering box is aligned, clamp it loosely to your beam and align everything up prior to tightening it.

alright i didn't take the steering column apart i just disconnected the 4 bolt that connect the column and the steering box, they are in an X.

and by base i mean where the turn signal and wiper swithces are, that section, there is now a gap between it

Then it sounds like you have to align your box.
