Title: '78 Westfalia Project
Post by: busnerd on May 11, 2005, 08:21:15 PM
I started the rust repair on my new bus last weekend and I thought I'd start a thread to show the progress.
Plans for this bus are to do rockers inner and outer, doglegs and the usual places.  I just want a presentable camper for the summer.  I don't know if I will paint the whole bus or just try to match the repair areas to the rest of the bus.  It's an automatic, which is a first for me, so my girlfriend can drive me around.
has anyone driven an auto bus before??  I hadn't before this one and I'm stoked on how smooth it is.
anyway, I'll try to update the photos as I move along.
thanks for looking
clarke.

Hey Clark,
Talk to Aircooled Angel she and Mike have/used to have a automatic 79. I've gotten rides in that bus and it seems to work pretty well.. Just hills are a little interesting.

This is where my westy is at now, painted the wheels, polished it up.  The paint on the rust repair areas doesn't match too well but it's good enough for now.  I may make the complete repaint of the van next summer's project.  Because it's camping time now

Don't you totally love the auto? It's so much more relaxed. We got a new 79 this year with a standard and I freaken hate it. I was so much comfortable in the old auto.

I almost bought '78 with an auto transmission and they are so smooth.  I did some checking up an aparently that transmission was so successful it was used up to the '90 Jetta.  I was just worried as well about fussing on the hills but if you just gear it down to second it should be fine.  And I would put a temp gauge on the third cylinder I guess, especially with the auto tranny working the motor a little harder.  i find mine helps me time downshifts to keep the motor cooler.
look forward to more pics of the project!

here are some updated pictures, new audi wheels, and a keyless entry system that I bought off ebay and installed this weekend.  I know power door locks are everywhere, but having them in a 78 bus is sweet.
