Title: Fuel Line Rusted?
Post by: cutekid on May 07, 2005, 02:00:48 PM
I have a question...
I am looking at this beetle and it won't start unless the mechanic drop some gas into the carb?
he is saying that the problem is the fuel line being rusted so gas can't flow through?  Has anyone ever seen this before?
and how much would it cost to change a fuel line?
any certified mobile vw mechanic here?
thanks

play with the fuel pump. that sounds like what mine was doing last week after not running for 3+ years...would dump gas down the card, she would fire up and then die after 5 seconds of running. took the pump off, played around with it a little, greased it up, put it back on, put a little more gas down the carb and woila!! she's alive!!!

check to see if theres fuel in the carb (carb could be plugged up) check to see that the fuel pump is in good working order, then if all checks out, take the tank out, and unplug the rubber line coming off of the hard line in the rear, and try blowing air through...

so if you can't blow air through....that means it has to be the line?

they usually dont rust right through, but can be clogged with stuff
if it is rusted through it doesnt take much to run a new line either on the outside edge of the pan (easiest) or through the stock location (more patience needed)

If you use xcaspers mechanic it's about $1000.00 bucks    :o      .  You can do it for your self for under 20 bucks . You should clean out your gas tank at the same time Though  .

you doing it would cost a sunday, a length of 1/4\" fuel line, and some zip tie
and for someone else to do it (someone thats done it before...) not more than a couple hours labour i guess
one more thought occured to me though, it could be as simple as the sock filter being clogged in your gas tank, ask your mechanic if he has checked that...
