Title: 1600dp In '64 Van
Post by: Splinter on April 30, 2005, 04:54:03 PM
Hello out there, I'm so glad to find a bunch of air-cool folks out there that are close to home. My name's Glenn and I am restoring a '64 Van for my wife, Stacy. The body is done, now it's time to fix up the motivation. The engine in this thing is from a 12V van (around '68 I think) and I finished it off good by driving it up the cut with the hammer down and very little oil sloshing around. It was an aircare-failing oil-dripping mess anyway, so I'd like to upgrade to something better. I'm a mechanic myself, but very much into domestic V8's so far. What I hear so far is that I should seek out a 1600 dual-port and stuff that in there.

My questions are these...
 - Is this an easy swap to do? If not, what do I need to accomplish it??
 - What should I be paying for a used 1600DP?
 - Anyone out there have a complete one for sale?

I've been buying all the sheetmetal from CIP. It's alright but not that great in quality. Has anyone bought anything major like and engine or transaxle from these guys? I'm looking at a rebuilt transaxle, but I don't want to get stuck with garbage!

Thanks for any help you can give me, the van would look better if it wasn't parked!

The crew @ airspeed are the best, they have answers to all your questions, access to the best in parts and will do as good if not better on pricing compared to CIP, they have a great shop and have lots of product in stock so you can do some hands........

I dont buy anywhere else.

Sweet, I found this site because of another referal. I will call them up.

I noticed that you had a 70's fold out rear seat for sale. If you still have it, how much touble do you think I would have putting it in the '64? I've never actually seen one. Our van is gutted inside, so anything goes.

Stacy picked the color so I'm not 100% sure, but I think it is \"Birch Green\"

I'm wanting to eventually replace my butter ball colour,

I'll get that for you for sure. I've got to get in touch with my buddy's paint rep friend who got it for us, so it may take a day or two.

Nice van!

CIP doesn't sell transaxles anymore because they were in fact garbage.  best to get what you have rebuilt, especialy if you'r planning on retaining the reducion boxes.  you should get it all looked at the same time.

I take it it is already 12 volt that is the first step to watch for . Clearencing the tranny for flywheel wich is usually larger than 6volt flywheel Geoff can answer most of your queastions and I have had good service from day one . Good luck and welcome  aboard  :)

Thanks for the heads-up on CIP transaxles. I'll have to have to re-do this one then. Know any experts? I've had some good dealings with Bert's in the past, but that wasn't old VW stuff. I'd also be interested if anyone knows of a supplier that can get me rebuild parts for it. I haven't called Airspeed yet, as it is Saturday night, but most places don't deal with that kind of stuff.

I actually helped the previous owner of the van put the 12V engine in, so I know the pain of the flywheel clearance firsthand. That was quite a while ago, but I think we got the grinder out and modified the transaxle case. Sound right? Like I said, aircooled VW is a new world for me.

I take it 1976BUS sold the z bed?

Grinf Carefully they burn real good! Talk to Hansk on air speed forum, he's rebuilt a few tranny's for rails or other things!

z bed is not sold, but I am not sure as to the fit, it is from a later model bay window bus.

it will fit.  it's pretty common practice to swap later westy stuff into split busses.

I'm interested in looking at that stuff then '76... I emailed you my #

Airspeed seems to be the connection everyone says it is. I called today and they have parts and more parts!

I'm still waiting to hear back about the paint code. The can doesn't have the color code on it, but it is U-Tech urethane paint.

I couldn't get the paint code from the rep, he just said it was \"Birch Green\" in german, and it was a Volkswagen color.

Stacy found the color she wanted on this site: http://autocolorlibrary.com/acl_files/volkswagen.html (http://autocolorlibrary.com/acl_files/volkswagen.html)

Just type in 1964 for the year, Click 'View chips', and select 'Page 6'. It's on there. It's a ditzler color so I guess the rep I dealt with just found something close to it.

Another member hooked me up with a used 1600DP, so it's back to the tools!

See you all at the swap meet
