Has anyone had the oppurtunity to build a header system form scratch? If I remember right, a proper header is made up from equal length pipes. I found a place in Seattle that sells the collectors, and a bunch of \"U\" pipes, and 90 degree bends.
Anyone know the science behind a good merged header?

I built a 4-2-1 header for better torque, for all out hp a 4-1 is better. Here is a link. Next time I will just build a 4 -1 header, the torque difference is not that much.

Stahl headers had the best pricing when I bought all my pipes. I used 16 guage pipe and made all my merges. I bought the flanges from lordco. I had everything shipped to Blaine. No brokerage then. There is a place in Sumas that also receives packages which would be good for you to save on shipping and no brokerage to pay. My mom in Abbotsford uses this place all the time, I'll ask her the name when she gets here tomorrow.

It may be easier to just modify what you have to make it fit your car.

I think I might have to mod the 1 3/4 S&S I bought - the collector hangs really low and on my last trip to the mainland (onroute to GCVWS) the old BC Ferries off ramp ground quite the flat spot into the merged section. Could be fun trying to tuck it up under the apron.

Thanks for the links Kevin, they offer a box of production mistakes for $150. I've started to hatch a plan now.
Bending Mistakes: These are pipes which were incorrectly bent for production headers. Each box contains a generous assortment of bends and straight section combinations and should provide you with enough tubing to fabricate a typical set of headers, or other exhaust components. Bending mistakes are a great economical choice for custom headers!

Yes, I had to take my car to them. Its close to where you got the beetle sandblasted.

Hey Matt, if this works out, I might be looking to have one made. when you figure out the total costs on parts and labour, if its not obscene I might get you to make one for me.( if you're interested)

I took my 1 1/2\" header to Taylorwood automotive in langley, he said he could make me one for a couple hours worth of labour if I provide the collector and flanges. I'm still considering making my own here, but I will keep you posted.

The decision has been made. I bought a 1 5/8' merged beetle header from the fine folks at Airspeed. I'm going to cut it and modify it myself to make it work for a type 3. Mine will be the ginuea pig, we will see how it turns out.
