Hey Guys thought I would post that there are some apprenticeships availible at both the Vancouver Drydock and Vancouver Shipyards.
At VDC:
Shipfitter (Steel Fabricator)
Painter
Engine Fitter
At VSY:
Shipfitter (Steel Fabricator)
Welder
Engine Fitter
Machinist
They are union postitions and the pay is good I would imagine, benefits are pretty good as well.
I've worked with these companies for around 3-4 years and I can tell you that a big retirement group is about to happen - the workforce is getting near that age and there aren't alot of young people coming on board lately. There is a really good opprotunity to have a good long lasting career if you are interested.

Nice of you to post this info. Apprenticeships have always been hard to find. I'm sure somebody out there in ASForum land can use this lead.
As a side note, how are opportunities for journeymen?

No problem, I know decent paying jobs are hard to come by these days.
I honestly don't know as I am \"management\" and don't get alot of exposure in that area (other than giving them shit :) ).
From what I have seen and heard overall it's a pretty decent job for the guys on the front lines - 25+ an hour, double bubble for OT, free world class gym use with trainers, good benefits/pension etc...
I would think the route to take is contact the union and get in as a permit worker, get your time in and become senority ranked. The Vancouver Drydock has repair contracts for the next 1-2 years on ferries and the Shipyard is currently bidding on a new ferry build (120ish car) and does all the general fleet repair for Seaspan,Cates etc... ( I am usually stationed at the Shipyard )
Local 1 is the Drydock union and Local 502 for the Shipyard.

The above numbers are for reception at the respective yards, ask to be transfered. They will then tell you to send in a resume so have one ready.
Also if you are applying at the Shipyard - keep in mind that I will make a point of bossing you around :) and I can be bribed if you get on with the company.
I believe the spots are limited so move quick on this.
