Title: 1968 Sunroof Daily Driver - Restoration
Post by: Mike Scott on January 30, 2005, 12:33:52 PM
He we go. I just purchased this from the other Mike Scott (Thanks gutterslug). Time to build something for driving around town. I'm tired and bored of driving my 1986 Toyota gutless 4runner. The plan for the bug:

*Mate with late model pan
*Gas heater
*Narrowed beam, dropped spindles and front disks
*17\" x 7\" Boxster Wheels
*Mild motor, 1600cc with dual kads
*Silver paint
*Early dash look, late fenders, bumpers, and massive elephant foot tails

*Still debating what to do trim wise, the car has welded and fill trim holes, but I'm not a fan of the cal late model look. I'm scared about trying the drill through hard weld material, any advice?

I hope to make good progress on this, the house renos are almost done. So I'll be working full time (after work) on this after Mid-Feb. in an attempt to finish for this summer.  I got a new digital camera, so I have to use it for something, I'll take lots o pics.
Till next time

Don't drill where the welds are. make a new hole in the panel, and drill right next to the old holes.

*sniff sniff* I think I'm gonna cry.  I miss my baby already. B)

Looks like it's got a good home now. Nice little shelter you've got set up there.

I guess I should get on finding those cables for ya!

Well, a few big changes since the last post. Plan is still the same though. I traded the '68 shell and bought a rust free '70 sunroof to start the project. The '70 is pretty complete. I spent yesterday in the garage narrowing the beam. I did some research on narrowing and then just went for it.

I took 5\" out of the beam. I like the look of a 4\" narrowed beam and I wanted to use CB drop spindles and front disks. I decided to cut the section from the centre after seriously comtemplating cutting in two segments outside the mounting points. The control arms ride on needle bearings at each end of the beam and on some sort of a guide about 6\" into the beam, I was worried about cutting and welding near this inner guide if I was to cut outside the mounting points. Also, with \"avis\" type adjusters and a german beam I really dont know how you can install them without taking a portion of the beam out (the part where the stock grub screws and dipples are).

Anyway, I removed the stearing damper bracket and stearing stops, cut out the 5\", removed the stock mounting points, installed the adjusters, welded back on the mounting points in new locations, welded back on the stearing damper bracket and stearing stops. Now I just have to clean it up and see if it fits  ;)

Getting closer in the ghetto garage, got the motor in and brakes working. Just have to do some final assembly, I little more primer, the interior, some tuning, then rip it completely down and send it for paint.

Unless your right front quarter has been modified, I'm thinking your '68 is really a '69. \"68 had a finger indent for the gas door instead of the cable operated gas door which started in '69. Either way it's looking good, nice progress!
