Title: Problems Firing Up!
Post by: reefreshd_jive on November 07, 2004, 01:34:14 PM
recently i have had problems starting my car after driving it for a bit. for example, went to a pizza place for lunch that is 5 min from my work, i got my food, and then my car would fire up. it turns over, but wont start up. sometime it will take a min, somedays 5. but when it is cold it is not a problem.
any idea what it could be? i was thinking coil, but now that i think of it, i just hooked up my heat in my car. maybe my gas line is running near the heater boxes? would vapor lock cause this?
thanks for the help!

what do you mean by hooked up heat? did you install heater boxes or a gas heater? Any water getting into stuff it should not?

i installed all the tubes, and linkage to make the heater boxes work. their might be a little bit of water getting into my carbs, but i park under and overhang so their shouldnt be!

update-
i disconnected the driver side heater box. and it seems that it works. my gas line runs right above the heaterbox. i have driven my car around for a bit today, and has started everytime now!

I have had a similar problem, it was my coil i replaced it and it was fixed, check to see what colour the spark is on your coil, take the centre wire off your distributer cap and turn the car over for a sec, i cant really remember but you might have to hold the wire close to metal, you should have a nice blue spark, if its yellow or orange then your coil is shot. make sure you keep any gasoline or  flamaboles  away when you do this.

I would think you have an issue with the coil, have you checked all your other electrical. plugs, wires, cap and rotor? If so give the coil and condensor a swap and see what happens. You may still want to make sure you have ample clearance on your fuel lines from the heater boxes.

Could be a long shot but my nephew just went through several months of hell with his 74 sunbug similar to what you are experiencing. It turned out to be mucho corrosion in the gas tank from sitting unused for several years. They had to replace the tank, fuel pump & fuel filter as well as blow out the tank ventilation system. Could even just be the vent, try it with the gas cap loose. Wayne
