OK I'll take a stab at this .
Type 1 swing axle trans has the solid type axle from trans to wheel and remains atttached to the trans as trans is removed from the car . Type one IRS has a double jointed axle with CV joints at either end which can be removed from the trans and car while trans and wheels remain in the car. Type 2 IRS is basically the same as type 1 IRS but bigger , heavier , stronger and different gearing and mounting .
All buses 67 and older had reduction box trany's  . Basically a beetle swing axle trans with a reduction gear housing at the end of the axle giving it more ground clearance and lower gearing.
Either type 2 trans has been adapted to type 1 cars as have type 1 trans into buses . Hope this helps or makes any sense .

thanks for the info

is the reduction box trany a good choice for a off road buggy?

can the hubs be mounted to other axles, is it worth it for the extra clearance?

are reduction box tranys and parts widely available or scarce?

Reduction boxes are probably good for off road travel , not so much for racing . They fit only beetle swing axle tranys and can't be put put on anything else . There is a bus reduction box trany for sale in the clasifieds of this forum for $150 I think .
An early 70's bus IRS trany adapted to a IRS beetle suspension may be the best of both worlds though . There is a lot of after market and racing pieces avialable  which are based on this combo.
