Just putting a feeler out there to see how many people would be interested in cruising down in their air-cooleds to next years classic together. I know it's still 10 months away but with some good planning it could be the roadtrip of a lifetime. I'm thinking it would be cool to take a few days to get there and hit every VW Shop we can between here and So-Cal.
Ive already commited to going next year so for me it's just a matter of how I get there.
So anyone else interested?
-
What are the dates? maybe I can shoot to debut the notch there!!
-
I think it's about a week or so before our show.

j/k Matt (sort of)
I would love to say yes to this but the current financial situation (or lack of one [_[ ) doesn't let me plan that far in advance.

hmmm.....I guess I better get busy then.

#$%@ &%^ Bill.
j/k sort of.
(I'd like to say what I'm actually thinking but I think the censorship button was raised recently)
-
Damn that would be an awsome trip - you planning on driving the bug?
-
I would really like to drive the bug, I guess it all depends on how many people are going....The square would make it.....but taking the bug would be awesome!
-
There has been some chatter of some of the DVKK guys taking their cars down also... Anyone have any connections to look into renting a hauler to transport a few cars down?
-
Dare I say it.................
..............Trailer what?
-
i may be interested in that, had a great time this past year
russ
-
i would go
-
Im pretty sure that about 5 or 6 of us are trailering the cars down next year. I know I said trailer but to drive them would be insane!!!!
-
That's what I'm thinking - Has anyone flat towed (tow-barred) a bug that kinda distance before?
-
That is why you take a few days to get down. Not a race but a nice cruise.
-
Did you say 2008 cause thats how long it will take to save the money and beg my wife's permmission to blow it on a car show I know the greatest on the Earth you try explaining that to her Ha Ha
Who knows stranger things have happened I guess I better start learning to leave my comfort zone :(
Either way one year for sure I'm goin to go its up to B.C. lottey :D :D
-
I've heard tails of guys towing bugs on tow-bars that far. Main thing is, is be sure it stays out of gear and shouldn't be a problem at all.
I would be up for this but I'm still in school at this time.

I'm in the same boat Marty!, Although I do have a trailer hitch for my EIGHT PASSENGER BUS ;) :P
-
James, I would probably lean towards a car dolly. Since you have access to all the materials it wouldn't cost you much to build one.
-
We are in, I am going to take the MOFO/ Trailer, and then I can drive the car whenever I want on each leg of the Journey...
I think the DVKK and the DGLVK should get together andplan this out so we can have stops at local shops etc... Make it a huge event... ;) ;)
Gavin I am sure you could hire a transport company to haul a bunch of you down..
-
Most transport companies stage cars until they get enough for a full or almost full load to make it worth their while. If you can get enough cars to go you could probably get a decent price....One thing to remember is if you need them by a specific date you may have to pay a higher rate.
-
Wow, look at the response, we could be making a big showing at this rate!
-
I'd love to do it! All I have to do is build the car , finish a bunch of other crap , save some money , get the time off , get permission , save some more money , etc. etc. .... well it's not totally imposible . And I'd be DRIVING it all the way , ear plugs and all!!!!! It's the only way !!
Who ever has the most bugs splattered on the windshield WINS !!!
-
Gavin, count me in for a spot on the car hauler!
James, flat towing that distance is nothing. My uncle used to tow his 68 Bug from Vancouver to Mazatlan Mexico every winter behind his ex-Greyhound bus. He did it 9 times then sold the car and tow bar to another RV'r.

.
:o  ???
-
Were down for that. We were planning on driving down anyways. The more people the better. Just think of all the memories well be making!! Lets start planning this at the Saturday get together.
-
i would seriously like to go but i'm in for a cruise not an all out 15hr day of driving then another, keep in mind my beetle only cruises at about 70mph (easliy go higher but seems run nice around there)
i can't make breakfast but let me know what some thoughts are from the people there
russ
-
My bus and I might be interested in the idea of a roadtrip. Should be well on its way by then... damn well better ;) Getting windows tinted soon :D Oh, I'd be driving her down too ;D... it'd be a blast :D :D :D
Any links around for the show?
-
70mph!! Hell I can barely hold 55-60! I think Shane was thinking of taking a few days to get there - hit a bunch of VW shops/sights on the way.
-
That is the plan. A nice slow cruise. Because half the fun is just getting there :!: Hitting a lot of shops along the way and also a lot of back roads.
-
trust me at 70mph it will still take a few days to get there, but i am fine with 55-60 no problem
russ
-
There are websites that allow you to plan a route that hits scenic sites/attractions etc...
-
Has anyone flat towed (tow-barred) a bug that kinda distance before?
I flat towed my '55 bug from Alberta to Quebec without problems.
-
What I would like to do is get a few guys who are commited to the trip and plan it all out. So if you wanna be part of the planning just let me know. We can also take more about it on at Sat. breaky.
-
I would love to drive down in my beetle, if I ever get this thing finished!
Come on guys, get me motivated!
Shawn
-
I towed my 63 with a tow bar and Pathfinder from Oregon to Calgary last summer. No problems. When I came down to the GCVS, I towed my 70, again with the Pathfinde. The only issue was the deep sump oil plug scraped every now and then and needed to be replaced when I returned home.

Latest reply ever....?
I'm in for cruise for sure. You guys come up with some ideas over breakfest the other day?
I need a sticker to put on the back of my car to keep me motivated and working on it through the winter. I think the participation would be huge if we plan early!
Anyway, keep us posted as to the plans

We had a blast doing this a few years ago (I think 2000?) we had 5 cars there for the week. I drove straight thru (24hrs) but I think the others did it in two days. (much better)
There isn't a lot of VW shops on the way down if you take the 5. Pat in Oregon and L5 are near the 5. CB Performance is over a hour East of the 5.
Once your in the LA area your in VW MECCA! Shops are far apart but it's cool to vist as many as you can.
If every one really wants to do this maybe we should think of renting a beach house for a week or two. The DVKK has talked about doing this for a while, It would be a blast living on the beach for a week during the Classic. Only problem is there is not much parking
We all stayed at the host hotel when we went, plenty of parking for the cars and tow vehicles. We even parked the Mo home there and camped for a few days B)
I hope everyone can make this happen, It would be great to have even more Canadian cars there next year.
-
when I get another aircooled, i'm in.
-
Remember, Car haulers have accidents too.

Cindy Rylie and I are in as well - already planning Disney and such!
-
Disney is on the list for my two wee ones.
-
Damn disney doesn't book in 2005 yet - looks pricey!
-
We are definately in. I dont know about a beach house though as hotels are plentifull. Either way it will be a week to remember.
-
When you price out a beach house with a group of people it can be fairly reasonable.
1500-a week for one that sleeps 8-10 people.
But your right there are lots of deals on Hotels and most may want their own place.
