Title: 55 36hp Run On Unleaded?
Post by: slugbug on August 21, 2004, 02:04:25 PM
Is it safe to run unleaded with a '55 36hp engine?
Or  should I have the heads rebuilt with updated valves, seats and guides.

Perfectly safe.  Don't even think about it anymore.

I have always run my 58 Ghia on high test - 93. I never have tried to run it on 87 what does everyone else use?

If your 58 Ghia still has a 36er in it, you are not only wasting money, you are giving up precious hp.  That's right, your low compression engine will make more power with low octane.

My own engine is 2 liters with 40 Dellortos, 'bout 120 hp.  With 8.5:1 compression ratio, I only give it 87 octane.  Runs great that way.

Well I did build the 36hp and bumped the CR to 8.5-1 not the normal 6.?-1.  I had a Judson installed which I caculated to be about 10:1 so I need every bit of the 93 with the Judson.  Without the Judson it does run fine with 87 or 89.
