Hello everyone,
I'm just starting to look for a new commuter car for work and I was wondering if anyone has any advice when looking at used VW Jetta diesels? Any years that I should avoid? Pros or cons? Other cars I should look at?
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you,
Kevin

I can't really think of a better commuter car. I would say any year is good. If buying a mk4 1999.5 - 2006 I would avoid the Automatics as they are prone to failure. Other then that any is good. People love the 1999.5 - 2003 ALH motors, they are known to be very reliable but the 2004 - 2006 BEW is also good. The 2006 BRM MK5 is a 1 year only motor for us and then ofcourse any of the 2009 + 2.0l diesels are also fantastic.

I would shop for a 2000 -2003 TDI standard trans if I was looking for a good commuter. Own a 2003 TDI Golf and a 2004 TDI Jetta. Both get good mileage. Jetta best was 62 mpg. Average is probably 56mpg. The 2004 has 280k. No signs of cam problems yet.
Owned a 2006 TDI Jetta. Got less mpg. Had a stupid small diameter fuel fill so we couldn't fill at our bulk fuel station. Fuel would come spitting back at you. We sold it. Good riddance.
