my factory manual says that the steering box uses "liquid transmission grease". is that whale oil or what? whats the modern equivalent? google isn't really being too helpfull.

80W90 gear oil same as what you would run in your Transaxle is my GUESS. Its probably a real bad translation from the German "Getriebe öl" :-)

SAE 85/90 Hypoid gear oil from what I could find via our friend google

50/50 mix of wheel bearing grease and gear lube is what I use in my stuff.

this is an insert from Wolfgang about steering box lubrication.
"Fill the box with Power Punch if you can find it, if you can’t, use a mixture of 3 parts STP Oil Additive to 1 part CV Joint Grease. The consistency should be like a thick molasses, not runny. If you find the Power Punch it comes in a handy squirt bottle. If you end up having to mix your own, get a small squirt bottle (Like a mustard bottle) or a small funnel, and fill it before you put the box in."

i ended up using some moly grease ( the brown kind in grease gun tubes). it only took about 1 ounce. but it feels way better up there. the car never sees cold weather, so its not like i had to worry about too high of viscosity. at least that was my theory. i think if anything thinner went in my steering box it would just pour right out.
