Title: Project Never-stroke
Post by: James Buchan on August 28, 2003, 11:03:50 AM
Well I guess i'll add my project to this forum, maybe it will give me incentive to get it done before next season :)

I made a mad rush to try and get her done by the GCVW drag night this year but fell short so I have gone back to redo the things I was forced to rush. I'll post some pictures of different aspects of her as I go, please make intelligent, insightful comments as you like. I am open to ideas and suggestions as well.

So here is some info on my car:
1966 Standard Beetle - purchased in Levingworth Wash 3 years ago.
At the time was a poor runner but pretty solid throughout.

Currently she is dissmantled, but not pan off.
With the help of Dave Cosgrave I have a 1915 waiting to go in her once the tranny is taken care of.

I'll post some pics in the next while so you can see where I am at.

Hi James,

I met you at the show this year, I own the red '74 with big wheels and a small motor. Anywho, I was wondering if you've registered your car in Canada yet........... I bought a '63 from the states and am looking to \"import\" the car. you have any tips?

I havent registered it as of yet. I figured it would be easier to do after I have finished rebuilding it. Aircooled Angel recently transfered hers into canada and found that it was pretty easy.
Some things that you should look for:
1.Working electrical components ie. Horn, lights etc.
2.Visible rust, they look for structural integrity
3.Brakes, and other mechanical like fuel gauge, wipers etc.

I believe you can get a check list from the place you plan to have it inspected that guides you through things they check for.
Good luck, let me know how it works for you.
J

Hey there,

I still have the list of things that they checked if you want I could email it to you. As James said I thought it was going to be a diffacult experience but they took the car in for 1/2 an hour, took my money and we were done. As James said they will check for rust, they will put the car up on a hoist, and check out the floor pans/heater channels etc, so as long as your car is structurally sound you shouldn't have a problem. They also checked my engine to make sure I wasn't leaking any oil, and that all the fuel lines etc were hooked up right. They checked my transmission to make sure all the gears worked, they checked my suspension system, braking system, electrical. Basically everything you would want to work anyway. I can't make any recomendations as to where to take the car as we did our inspection on the island. Maybe Russ could suggest someplace cause he brought his 57 home from Cali and he was who instructed me as to the import/export process when I originally started thinkign about this (thanks again Russ). I took my bug to a heavy transport place and they seemed so excited to see a bug that I think there were lax with us a little bit. Anyway let me know if you need the list or have any other questions. Good luck!

Anna

QUick update, Thanks to Kirin I now have a 72 box converted to Swing with short axles that I can build into my close ratio box. I also picked up a 1500 complete engine from him, needs some work but will make a good aircare engine. I'll let everyone know when it's good to go and lend it out for aircare's. (for beer of course :)
SPeaking of beer, get ready Brian....

Ok here's another update:
On Sunday Brian was nice enough to help me out be trailering my car(one of the only times it will ever see a trailer) out to \"AutoMattic\". Matt's going to be working his magic on my car, he'll be replacing both rear bumper mounts and both quarters with a few minor other fixes here and there.
He are some before pics stay tuned for after pics:

Actually that is a top secret design scavanger setup - good for an extra 15hp.

The breather that I was sent was a tad to wide to fit behind the shroud ( I got someone else's by mistake) so that is why it's up there. Actually I kinda like the way it looks up there - I'm notching out my deck lid today - shoud looks pretty sweet popping outta it.

Engine's gotta breath right!
