Title: shipping a car to USA
Post by: josh on November 16, 2015, 03:20:56 PM
having a hard time weeding through all the BS......sold a car to someone in the states and am looking at trailering it across boarder for him and delivering. I am familiar with the process going the other way importing a car into canada but not exporting? Has anybody done this recently? Buyer is cool with using a broker for paperwork if needed. any help greatly appreciated!

cheers Josh

just sold a car to a dude from l.a.  he used a broker(the dealer) to get all the paper work. he told me if it was 25 years or more it would of been easy as there is no emission certification to deal with, just pay the tax upon importation

Ya always easier if car is old....this is a 58 ghia so no worries there.

Anybody know if anecotes Washington has facilities to import/export? Way easier/faster to take that ferry from the island. I tried calling and nobody want to talk...surprise suprise!

Pretty sure it can only be done thru the peace arch and the truck crossing.  For simplicity it's better to deal with the guys that do it day in and day out.  No need to start off the trip on a bad experience and a possible major time delay.

Truck crossing, NOT peace arch. You don't have to do anything on the Canadian side (unless your buyer's broker is there). You have to go on the TRUCK side, with all the commercial vehicles. Even though you are a private citizen, you are acting as the importer into the USA and are thus considered crossing for commercial reasons. Be prepared that agents on the commercial side are likely to be difficult, and perhaps "rude" to you. You won't know the system, and they won't be very helpful with you on it.

Other than that...it's a lot of fun! </sarcasm>

Josh
I know you can bring cars in on the Coho so I'm guessing you can take them out also. It's either that or the truck crossing and they are much "nicer" at Port Angeles. Wayne
