Title: 2015 Baja 1000 Yolo Racing, Heading back for a win!
Post by: Geoff on October 14, 2015, 10:08:47 AM
Hard to believe it's almost been a year!
The 2015 Baja 1000 is just a month away and the team is thrashing to get a full rebuild done on the car in time. Once again we will be asking for help from the community to follow online and text locations of the car. The reason for this is the chase vehicles have no way of knowing where the car is without these important text. This is what saved us last year when we broke down in the desert. Details to follow.

We have a few new sponsors this year and will list them soon. If anyone is interested in sponsoring the Firemen I can send you the contact info.

The team has spent the last three days pre running the entire 2015 Baja 1000.
Two nights camping in some of the most spectacular and remote areas in the Baja.

Wifi is limited so pics may have to wait. The race is only 5 days away.

Currently running in second!

i think they may be first as it has the team ahead doing 70mph and trophy trucks only do 50 for the most part
either way they are killling it

It looks like the the first car in the class is at the finish.

Second place is in a commanding lead over our boys, who are scrapping it out with two others to claim 3rd.
Erich is 4th in car 575 and 22 miles behind the #3 car and up until a few minutes ago was gaining fast at a speed of about
17mph faster.  However, car #3 has picked up the pace.

Twenty minutes ago car #5 was only 3 miles behind Erich, but he's at a dead stop.  Now at 12 miles behind.

We're going to need a good breakdown of car #2 for them to catch up.  Currently #2 is at over 50mph while our guys are still
stuck in the school zone.

An unknown is car 553.  It has lost telemetry, so who knows where it might be.....

good write up Bruce,
#2 has pulled even further ahead at this point

the race for third is damn close though and i think Eric may pass them shortly

Things are looking up!!

Car #3 has stopped!  Our boys are now only 13 miles behind.  That's half the distance from 1hr20 ago.

Car #2 is on the public highway, so that's why they're able to maintain speeds above 50mph.  However,
for over 20 min they were stopped.  A casual pee break given their hefty lead?

Car #5 is back in business after being stopped for close to an hour.  However, they're now in the school
zone with lots of crossing guards in the way.  Currently 21 miles behind.

I dont think this tracking this is accurate, how could car 558 be currently 6 th , while last seen at mile 1.  6 hours ago.......

I think car # 558 and 553 are both DNF and out of the race.

At this point, the race course crosses the main highway to La Paz, so that means it is an ideal location
for the chase cars to set-up pits.  Car #3 was stopped at this location 40 min ago, now our guys just
left after a quick pee break.  The course roughly parallels the highway for a while then it is on the
highway.  Car #3 is on the highway and pulling away, 19 miles ahead.

Car #5 is still having troubles and is now stopped at 30 miles behind.

They're getting close!  Now 7 miles behind car #3.  At one point they were 3 miles back, but a short
stop delayed them.  It's the fastest part of the track now. Speeds are just under 60mph.  I wonder if
there's an enforced limit since they are on a public highway?

Car #2 is slowing.  Stopped currently, our boys have gained 10 miles on them in the last hour.

Breaking news!  The rankings have changed.  The race has not been won yet!  The status of
car #579 has been changed from completed the race to not started.  That means our guys are
actually in 3rd place and closing on 2nd!

They are now in 2nd place!!

The former 2nd place car is stopped at a point where the course leaves the main highway, so
it's a pit stop or repairs.

Erich is now 91 miles behind the leader.  An hour ago it was 111 miles.  Four hours ago
they were 150 miles back.  The race leader has 148 miles to the finish.

Hex-hex-hex

The race leader was stopped for over half an hour.  This let Erich close the gap to 80
miles. The leader is now on the move again.

The third place car was also stopped in the middle of nowhere, so a real breakdown.
He's now going again, 5 miles behind Erich.

The race leader has only 1 mile to go.  At this point, if they broke down, they could
push it the rest of the way and still win.

Our guys are 72 miles from the finish, still in 2nd place.  For the past 5 hours, the
3rd place car has been nipping at their back bumper, always less than 10 miles
behind.  They've still got to keep pushing hard to guarantee a 2nd place trophy.

The 4th place car is only 39 miles behind 3rd place, so they are still a threat.

They finished second!  Nice work guys! 3 rd place was only a few mins behind.

I saw the live feed of them on the poduim. Eric said they had serious tranny issues and no neutral

Glad to see they made it safely.

Didn't they stagger the starts?

They do stagger the starts.  Erich started 90 sec after the third place car, so
even if Erich was right behind the third car, he would have still taken 2nd.

I haven't seen the official results, but I bet he beat car #3 by less than 5 min.

shitty ending to an awesome trip.

You're right Silas, they came in 3rd.  Don't know how that happened because they
were ahead of the second place car entering Ensenada, and they started the
race 90 sec after the second place car.

Official results for Class 5-1600:

91 Hernando .. Martinez Ensenada, BC 564 Class 5-1600 * 1 VW 1 29:04:46.444
98 Julio Cesar Morales     Calexico, CA 554 Class 5-1600     2 VW 1 30:53:19.948
99 Erich Reisen       W. Vancouver, BC 575 Class 5-1600 * 3 VW 1 31:00:46.153

EDIT:  The asterisk indicates there was a penalty applied.  I bet it was 10 min.
The first place finisher had a 45 min penalty.

We're awaiting answers on the "Penalties" that were given as this happened last year as well with no answers from SCORE.
Somethings fishy but the team is happy with a 3rd as well.

I'll need a few day's to recover and fill everyone in on the wicked adventure we had. Pre running the course makes all the difference as you could see in the first 250 miles of the race. We had a fairly good lead on most and that was in some sections with zero visability from fog and silt. It was a very tough course with lot's of contact and action. Grant did an amazing job driving while I called out our course as fast and clear as I could. Knowing the course made a good difference for us as we knew where we could push it and when to let others pass. A good example was when the white car in our class and a truck wanted to pass.... we let them knowing that a faster pace could result in damage or a roll over. 30 seconds later we passed the white car on it's side as well as another car from a different class that passed us.
It's all about going fast but keeping the car in good shape to pass it along to the next team.
