Title: coil and resistor ballast questions?
Post by: Das Bus on May 16, 2015, 08:44:43 PM
I have a 67 bus with a 1600 dual port. This is what the coil set up that my bus came with its  an electronic ignition that was wired like as you see. It has an MSD blaster coil but it has a resistor ballast with it. I have a few questions does it need the resistor ballast I don't really know 100 % it purpose but I have seen a lot of bus with out it. So do I need this? What is its purpose? And if I need it what is the best way to wire it? This is how it was wired not sure what type of power source was on the one terminal of ballast if it had a accessory power or start power on it. Any info would be greAt!
thanks Dad bus

The MSD blaster coil 8202 is intended to be used with the MSD ignition. If installing on a stock points style ignition system a 0.8 ohm ballast resistor or resistor wiring MUST be installed.

Pretty much all coils are meant to operate on a little ove 9volts ( I think usually 9.6) some vehicles have resistance in the coil + feed wire, others use an external resistor. There are some coils that have a built in resistor which does simplify the wiring a bit. Basically  power to coil when ignition switch is in " engine run" position. With an external resistor power goes from ignition switch to either side of resistor then to coil + terminal

Thanks guys looks like with the peniteonic ignition on a four cylinder they are say i need a total of 3 ohms resistance and that coil is only .7 from what I see so I will Need resistor value of 2.3 to give me 3 the on I have is a .8 and it worked but they are saying it's not good enough. I don't know they said it can roast the distributor I emailed MSD and peniteonic and both where not very willing to help but I did get that out of them so that's what I got out of what they said unless I'm taking the info wrong. Like is said there where very short Snd didn't seem to want to give me very good customer service I wasn't very impressed
