Title: What is the capacitor on the 6v generator for?

I don't have one of these on the generator for my '63, but both of the 40hp cores I got recently have a capacitor (I think) mounted on the generator, that grounds to the genny body and has one wire coming out of the end.

What is it, what's the purpose, and if it's a good thing, where is it supposed to hook up?

It connects to the D+ post and cuts down on the whine when you are listening to those weak or far away AM radio stations.

I think I'll let this one make the transition then, seeing as I'm eking out every last bit of performance from that mono 6 volt sapphire!

They were quite common back in the 60's and early 70's when we were trying to get KJR (when it played rock) on our 6V Blaupunkts.  Loved replacing the vibrator tubes. Then came 12V and life got better.
