Title: broken motor
Post by: purple turd on March 06, 2014, 08:31:06 PM
So im im driving from kelowna to vernon on saturday afternoon in my 70 bug when all I start hearing a bit of extra noise from the engine area. Sounds like a broken baffle in the muffler maybe. Hmm, so I slow a bit noise calms...speed up gets louder. Ok now it sounds like a rod knock.ah crap. So I baby it home, stopping at the grocery store first. (Shut off the car n fired it back up a few minutes later) went home. Pulled the engine out and apart.  Rods look fine, bearings perfect. End play ok, a little bearing material in the screen. Split the case.holy crap the crank is sheared completly in half. Looks like it splitaround a balancing drill hole. Everything else Iis fine to the point I could actually re use the main bearings. It didnt even vibrate although I didnt rev much.  Sorry for the long story but I thought some may get a kick out of it. Cant figure out pics or I would post a few

At first glance sure.....but if it were me, I'd be going over everything with a fine tooth comb! I'd be really surprised if you didn't bend a rod or something?

^X2^
All that twisting and clanging can't be good for bearing saddles and other parts that are used to holding things that only move in one direction.

You need a better camera!
I can't see close enough to determine if it was cracked for a while or let go all at once, did it make any odd clicky noises in the weeks prior to the failure?
Regardless props for blowing one up like that, when you break it might as well break it really good, well done!

Samsung galaxy tab.sorry. theres no "rub" marks like it was gradual. And not even any wear marks from driving it home. Its like it got brittle n broke clean. Maybe in a former life it got severely overheated. Guess I will never know. On a better note I ordered my 1902 today.hope to be on the road within 2 weeks
