Title: 56 oval trans

So I've started working on my pan, and have a trans. question. I bought this oval as a project and have no idea the condition of the transmission. Short of doing a rebuild on it, what should I or can I do/look for before installing the engine and test driving it?

change oil, have a look at how much metal is stuck to the magnetic drain plug and change the axle boots (even if they look ok?) and cross your fingers....it's called the trans lottery, win some ya lose some
