Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in but it seems to be the one that gets attention. I have a bone stock 1600 dual port and can not make it idle.fresh fuel timing set, valves done. As soon as the choke comes off the car dies.no vac leaks.the car didnt run at all when I got it . Now revs fine..no hesitation just wont idle.please help im missing something silly. The only obvious issue is the cutoff solenoid doesnt have a pintle at all.so it cant seat or unseat
-
I would make sure it is getting power. Also make sure that the cutoff solenoid works when power is added to it by listening for the clicking sound.
-
The pintle on the cutoff has been chopped off close to the solenoid body (not by me) so it has been totally disabled. I just dont know if it needs to be there at all
-
It should be there
-
It will be replaced if I can make this carb run properly but seems like a waste if the carb ends up being landfill
-
Try unscrewing the idle jet (brass hex head thing on the upper RH side of the carb ahead of the choke heater) about 1/2 turn, if it's been overtorqued and the passage is squished it won't idle when seated. The cut off plunger doesn't effect idle but it wll run on after you shut it off sometimes.
If loosening the jet helps play with it until you find the best spot and locktite it into position so the treads are sealed and it won't fall out, better than a new carb.

I probably have something that would work for you if you can't get yours working.
Gordon!

perhaps the idle jet is plugged. remove the plug on the pass side of carb and blow clear with compressed air

I had a very similar problem with almost your exact setup.
This s how things went down.
I spent hours troubleshootng. I had rebuilt the carb, you name it.
New coil, and ignition module, but wouldnt idle.
Someone suggested checking the coil... as if, it's new! It must be good, right?
A few more hours trying everything else...
Swapped out the coil and distributor to a known working 009 and bosch blue...
Vroom... beautiful idle.
Let us know what happens.

just rebuilt the carb from a non running engine..there was a lot of crap inside. soaked and blew out as best I could. will keep tryin. we will see
-
i had the same symptom during my last cruise of the summer in my 64 w/ 1600dp/009/blue coil. driving along, went around a corner, came to a stop, engine stumbled & died. i could start it, feather the gas pedal and rev it to keep it running, but it would not idle. i figured something must have gotten lodged somewhere where it didn't belong (sounds like vwchris on a saturday night ;)), so i needed to perform the roadside carb rebuild...
pull the air cleaner off. get the engine started and run to the back and stand facing the engine. manually operate the throttle with your left hand. rev it up to 2500/3000rpm and then swiftly put your right hand on top of the carb and "suffocate" it until it dies. start the engine again and do this 2-3 more times plus try it an additional 1-2 times by suffocating it almost to the point of dyeing but then release your right hand and operate the throttle with your left hand to keep it running.
** warning ** due to engine vacuum your right hand will get pulled down pretty hard onto the carb ** don't be scared **
try it out. i did and it worked and i drove home! it may or may not work for you but it's quick. and free.

I did try the hand over the throat trick. It sucks fuel from the float bowl up through all vacuum passages and the vent.didnt work this time.but worth a shot.havent had a chance to get back to it yet but the last episode I did get idle but had to back out the volume screw a long way
