I just bought a bug it has a 1914cc motor, that needs a new rocker arm assembly the previous one broke off, the bolts snapped, i was just wondering is a 1914cc a reliable motor for daily driving, and how fast might this thing be, its in a 65 beetle that is gonna be gutted the motor has dual dells, dunno what size, it also has an electric fuel pump a 009 distributer, i dunno what kinda cam is in it, the heads are dominater heads i believe, any replies would be great.

I'll take you for a ride in my bug - quite similar to yours I would imagine, then you can decide if a 1914 is fast.
Last time to the track I ran a 14.11 @ 98 MPH - with a stock tranny.
I've since worked out some bugs (not full throttle, tuning etc) and added a close ratio tranny, so I should see better numbers.
Hit mission tonight, we'll be racing.
Also why or how did the stud break in your head for the rocker arm?
As far as reliable - dunno only have 100 or so KM's on mine, but like anything with proper maintenance and a easy driving manner it should last if built right.

thanx james, i dunno how the bolts broke on the rocker arms, im gonna get em out today, i bought the car with the motor like that, the guy said he was just leaving his house to go to werk and the rocker assembly broke off, the car was parked ever since, (2 months or so) I'll try to come out to mission tonight.

the heart of a 1914 displacement is a 69mm crank is it not? as long as the compression isn't way up there, it should be fine for a daily driver, and like James' little rocket, good on the track as well. if there was something to worry about, it'd be the tranny if its not stock.

Compression is your friend, I run a tad over 10:1

Fair enough James but is it not true that the Bergs build most if not all of there angines around a stock compression ratio, maybe a tad higher, and run some amazingly quick times???
Not to say that you're wrong though, compresion does make a big difference, I'm running a 1600cc with close to 10:1 compression myself, and it cooks for a small disp. engine!
But I don't see any engine displacement being a bad daily driver(within reason) as long as its built right, Geoff ran a 2275cc in his Garnett 59 for a very long time and to the best of my knowledge had few problems.

No, the low CR engines are really slow.
Case in point, Gary Berg's 12 sec street car. When it was white he ran 12.30s with sky-high CR and race gas. And drove it all over SoCal with its 5 speed.
He later dropped the CR from around 12:1 to mid 7s:1. The car slowed to mid 14s in the quarter. They don't tell you this in the blue book, but there are plenty of first hand witnesses to the performance drop.

I would like to add my two cents.

History has proven that 94mm piston and cylinder combo can be reliable. Life span will depend on how you use and abuse the motor. Compression should be based on the duration of your camshaft. More duration, more compression. Talk with an experienced engine builder about your project, and you may get a cam recommondation. How do you plan to use this car?
James: Your car should be able to run 13.8 -13.9 no problem. I used to run 13.90s with a 1774cc motor, K8, 7.5:1 comp, close gearing, slicks, starting line weight 1800 lb .
Gary's car ran 12.30s with a high compression engine (12:1 ?), VP race fuel, and an FK87 cam (276 @ 0.050\"). Gary used to drive the car around on race gas. Later on, Gary changed the cam to K8 (258 @ 0.050\"), lowered the compression, and went slower. We can all go to the gas station and get pump gas, but race fuel is expensive and harder to find.

Luck? Or maybe I had the right combination. Really big ports, and I used to rev it to 7500. Heads are now on Scott Stackhouse's car.

Hmmm.....my appologise.....I was under the impression that the blue book was like the Bible, I guess I should educate myself a little more

hey, i have no idea what kinda cam is in the motor, and i dont know how the rocker arm studs broke either, the guy i bought it off of had no knoledge of the motor that was in it, all i know is i fixed the motor, and it runs pretty good, and it seem pretty fast, i drove it down the street the other day, i was immpressed :), but yeah i dunno what is in the motor and how old it all is, it doesnt leak oil, and it doesnt smoke, im gonna put a permit on it on saterday we'll see how she goes, im keeping my figers crossed that nothing bad happens :):):) :rockon:

for sure ill be at the street legals man, what are some of the rules tho? i have no idea i havent raced before, do you need a battery box or anything like that? plastic fuel filters are they ok? etc...

I have a 1914 in my sandrail with kadrons and a 110 cam Hans built for me. He did some porting to the heads and I love it ! Thanks Hansk!
