I'm taking my wife's 59 beetle transmission and utting in new seals. I removed all the bolts and nuts. Gave it the light tap...and yet the thing won't open up more than a inch. What the hell. Anyone know what I'm missing

Ok next who has a transmission that fits a 59 beetle It's a 1200cc. And I want one that I just need to oil in and ready to go. How much

The orig gearbox for a 59 is a split case. Is that what it still has?
To take that apart, you first must remove the axle tubes. Then you can split it.

The axle tubes Need to be taken off ....ok. The tubes are connected on the inside of the transmission. From what I see it is all connected

There's a steel stamped axle flange cover held on with six nuts. Take those off and you can pull the axle tubes off. Note the outer wheel bearing is a press fit onto the axle so you will need to do some persuading to get it off. Done right, a big puller. Or just use a BFH on the end casting by where the shock bolts on.
