Anyone in the VW Community had a catalytic convertor replaced... mines's 2000 golf that's noisy.. and recommendations?

I'd go vw quality, I had a 2.0 99 golf I had to change it cause it wouldn't pass aircare and within a year I had the same noise from my "new" aftermarket cat, but if its a driver then no need to pay the high $$

You might save $100 for an aftermarket cat but they are crap and don't last.

Do not let anyone talk you into an aftermarket cat converter.
My friend Chris works at Alpi's Auto Wrecking and should have one on hand for your Golf. Give him a call!

I may just have to go to one of the "muffler shops" that offer a lifetime warranty on their stuff. At least if it craps out, it would be replaced (parts anyway) I don't mind ever buying used stuff, except when you can't see inside to know if it's no better than what I already have. thanks for the thoughts

by "noisy cat"do you mean a rattle when its cold? my 6.0l gmc does that, at least thats what i think it is....

cats dont die ,they are murdered. somewhere along the trail your car has suffered over fueling,vac leak,drippy injector,faulty fuel reg,ignition failure,impact damage....something. aftermarket cats are crap for most domestic cars often resetting cat efficiency codes because they fail to light off properly and/or fail to meet or exceed ecm parameters. i always recommend factory replacements to ensure the check light stays out. as far as newer vws i sure the parameters are of a closer tolerance than domestics but couldnt say for sure as i have never seen a p0420 code in one . closest my 67 ever got to a cat is when i accidentally ran one over.

started with a rattle on acceleration, now rattles most times under any load.

The cats in these cars are part of the downpipe. What motor is in your car 2.0L ?

First thing, cats do need replacing at times, but if its just a ratle your hearing it may not be the cat at all,
One common issue is the mid mount breaking free of te exhaust pipe
Causing a loud and irritable rattle,
Check it by crawling under the car and pushing up on the exhaust pipe behind the cat (when cold to save your hand)
And by wiggling shaking pushing, you should be able to tell whether or not the midmojnt above the middle of the car is separated from the pipe,
If its not the push/wiggle on the car and if you can feel the catlyst moving inside the cat body then it needs a cat,
Oem or oe quality parts are the best, and deffinetly recommended, cheap weld in universals I would deffinetly avoid.

Yes, a 2.0L. When I called one place they said the cat came as a unit, with the downpipe right to the manifold. I'll get underneath and check it out. thanks for the advice!

My old 2000 2.0 jetta as well as my VR6 both rattled and it was just the heat sheild. They come loose and can be fixed.
