Hey, gang.
Moving up to Vancouver and don't want to spend the fortune it'd cost to put heat back in my So Cal bug. Between the new exhaust system I'd need along with all the new tin, I just don't have the time or the money. Anyone ever find one of those cigarette lighter plug in heater/defrosters that actually work?

Most of us have summer cars and winter cars up here. In winter the road salt will eat your So. Cal car for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If your situation will allow, to keep your car So. Cal, I'd recommend parking your car over the winter. Just 2 cents worth.

Ha! Yeah, totally not going to let my car see the salt. Plan to put it away for the winter. The heater/defroster thing is more to pass inspection than anything. I grew up in Massachusetts so I know all to well what that salt can do to cars. My old 65 turned into swiss cheese! :-P

X2, although there are days after it's rained alot and no frost is forecast that the roads are salt free so you can go for the odd drive in the winter. But those electric units are pretty useless in a drafty bug, it's a little like trying to heat a warehouse with a candle, to make the BTU's you really need you'd need a generator in the back seat. Dress up warm and carry a little squeegee for the inside of the windshield if the car leaks. Keep watching the Canadian tire flyers as they usually start putting that stuff on sale fairly soon, if you can get one for cheap it may keep a peep hole in the windshield clear enough to see.
If it's just for inspection purposes some tubes from the fan shroud to the heat inlets on the body will likely do, not many non VW types actually expect heat to come out of the vents, as long as it blows air it'll likely be OK.

I'm fairly confident there has to be some sort of defog system, whether it blew warm or cold wasn't the issue as long as the flow was noticeable at the windshield IIRC, if it came with it they need to see it or a reasonabe facsimile.
Anyone got a recent inspection sheet with all the boxes that need to be checked?

on an old car? Maybe something newer but I don't think they will check for it on an Provincial inspection. I haven't had any of the cars I brought up checked for one.

Some shops will fail you without a defrost on the windsheild (as it must have one). It's upto the inspector to let it pass or fail without it.

Princess Auto in Coquitlam has a 12 volt ceramic heater/defroster that should fit your needs. Base is adjustable. $24.99. Ask them for a thin magnet that you can superglue to the base. Then you can mount in multiple locations on the dash. They will have the 12 volt lighter plug unit as well. $40. should do it all in. The Langley store will have the item as well if its closer.
