what did they say you needed too upgrade on the car
-
Well,,, I was basking in the glory of it all and the \"Head Tech\" comes over. Tells me to sit down in my seat. Then proceeds to say I am either sitting to high or my side bar needs to be raised. Then I slouched down and said \" Hows that ?\" He said \"great but now you need a head rest and you need the 5th point for your harness.\" He then looked at my Harnness and said \" Oh look your harness expired in May\" So to make a long story longer I ask if I was done for the night. And he asked if I had a Fire jacket and I did. so he said I could continue if I stayed above 12's. So I need to install a racing bucket which sits lower so the side bar fits right, I also need to drill a hole in my floor for the 5th harness.... Yes Drill a hole..... :o :o :o :(
The harness must come up between you legs so it is close to the groin.
You must have all this if you do 11.99 or better...so you all know... He said at 11.26 My first run. he was going to let it slide but when I did the 10.99 he had to come over...But he did say it was impressive
So anyone knowing where I could get a bucket like Geoffs that sits low on tracks let me know...
I would love to get back out there
-
I have two fibreglass buckets that some nice guy gave me... I will probably only mount one of them. If ya want one of those, let me know. All you'd have to do is mount it on a stock track. That way it would be a quick change when your heading to the track???
I am around all this week and gone for 10 days as of Sat. Let me know if you want it. 604-999-5553

Do you think that would lower me down???If so maybe drop one off at Airspeed and I will see if it works and if it does not then I will send it back your way...
Thanks Gavin..
Shane
PS I forgot about that ^_^ ^_^
-
Try one of mine shane' already on the track and if I take the 4\" riser off it sits really low.
-
Just a thought , ..... could ya get away with mounting the 5th belt to that flange that runs across the front of the seat tracks from one track to the other. Ya know what I meen , about inch and a half high spot welded to floor and front edges of the tracks. Might save ya drilling a hole in the floor.
-
I will take a look before I drill that is for sure.... Good Idea Hans.... ;)
I am kinda addicted to this now. As is my wife. (Which is a good thing)
I know the car has so much more left in it... amd the Driver needs a lot more seat time.
BTW I just wanted to thank everyone for all the advice they gave me at the track, as a newbie I will take all the advice I can get ;)

Make sure you check out the NHRA regulations first, as I recall reading that the 5th harness needs to
be fastened behind the drivers seat.

Not sure what rules Mission Raceway is using but here are the General Regs:

:) Hey Gavin,
I bought a full on Race seat and Matt is welding brackets for it now... so we will see..
Thanks for the offer man.
-
i posted yesterday but somehow it did not come up-
go too mopac they have aluminum drag buckets made by rci that have reinforced head support -legal
your 5th point needs too be back behind you not right below the seat.
as far as your side bar it needs too cross between your shoulder and elbow.
you should do a drive by chief chassis where your cage was made and have a talk with him.he will most likely be able too answer any cage / safety questions you have , and he is only 5 min away from airspeed.
you better go too aircooled .net and scope out there rear wing .its a bolt on that fits between the rear air inlet slats.
CONGRADULATIONS , 11's first week, 10's second week -what next!!!
-
Mr.Shane....the seat is ready for you.
-
You rock man...... I can pick it up from your work or Airspeed what ever is easier....
PS dont forget the bill....
Jim, I think with the new seat I will sit in the right position. I needed this full on race seat anyhow. I am going to fit it all in there this weekand hopefully get to the track on Friday.
SO far, Car has shot straight and true... with alot still in her, if you look at my top speed on the 1/4
I will leave the wing for Cale and his burger and fries... ;)
-
Call me on my cell in the morning, 604-657-6127. just not between 9:30 and 10:00. I am stuck in an \"unproduction meeting\".
-
Actually , I'd concider that wing. From all I've heard over the years , a beetle is almost a perfect wing ........just backwards. Lots and lots of lift and wanting to turn around and face the wind backwards. And 125 mph seems to be just about the speed that it will do it at. The wing will reduce the lift so that YOU can still stear it , not the wind.
-
Maybe I will go by Cales house and \"Borrow\" his ..... cuz we know his car wont be ready this year B)

did you buy that seat -if so how much and where?
-
Yes that is the seat.... Kirkey... $372.12 (To the penny) @ Spirit Racing in Surrey 132 and 86th
-
Hey Shane,
Very cool seat B) . Cale`s wing is carbon fiber which best serves chicken strips, the burger is best served off of an aluminum wing ;) :mullet: . Anyhow we will be back at it again tonight trying to get his car ready for friday  . The Retard has got a fan shroud issue to figure out   what a bunch of peiced together crap, really cant beleive they can sell stuff like that  .
congrats on the top spot. :D
Shawn

THanks Shawn...
Hope to see you guys Friday.. B)
Ave me a spot on that wing for my pop

Hey Shane I'll back up what Hans said. When Shane Marriot and I were in sacto about 15 years ago all the big boys (Townsend , Luppino etc) were just starting to get serious with the turbos. That weekend we saw at least 5 cars crash at the top end of the track all approaching the 130mph marker. There were alot of records set that weekend (fastest top ends and most crashes). So again congrats on your 125 but tread carefully. When you loose traction at 125 plus the heavier back end wants to pass the lighter front end just like a lawn dart, if you throw it light end first it will always flip around to the heavy end first. Have you ever noticed how F1 drivers helmets are scalloped along the top? this is to reduce the lift created by the curved surface of the helmet. The helmets were trying to pull the drivers out of the cars above certain speeds. There are alot of curved surfaces on a beetle. Call me a woman Shane, just be carefull.
Gary.
P.S. I'm still mad about dyno day but (did someone say hamburgers and smoothies!!) I,ll get over it.
-
I have been talking to allot of people today about this. And as was said ... It only takes one time.....so Wing it is... Cuz I know the car can hit 130... Now I have to eat crow about Cales chicken strip holder...
-
Are you going to use an aluminum or a cool looking carbon fiber ricer wing?
-
I can't wait to see your first 130 MPH pass.
Gary.
-
Shane, I forgot to mention, when you bolt the seat to the frame put a barrier of some kind in between. When Aluminum and steel come in contact the aluminum begins galvanic corrosion and we don't want to see that on a $400 seat now do we?
Try a wide piece of foam, like canopy seal. anything so the two metals aren't touching each other.
Everything mount up OK?
-
If and when Cale gets his Taxi back on the road, he will prolly only get one run down the track
before he gets thrown out by the tech guys for no roll-cage, nevermind having the correct seat...
But hey, when you've got a Carbon Fiber serving tray/wing, what could wrong ? B)
(I guess I shouldn't talk, as I don't even have a suspension on my VW.... )
Actually the wing is a good idea, according to Bible of VW books - How to Hotrod VW engines
printed way back in 1970 by Bill Fisher. They have a section on Aerodynamics with some interesting
thoughts and figures. Keep the lift on the rear less than the front (more downforce on the rear),
as a light rear and a heavy front end will make the car want to swap ends. Lowering the front end
makes less lift on the front than rear and aggravates this condition, so putting a \"spoiler\" not a wing
on the rear will spoil the lift created in the rear and make it more stable at speed.
At 120MPH a stock '69 IRS Beetle generates 430lbs. of lift.
At 100MPH a stock '69 IRS Beetle generates 153lbs frnt & 136lbs rear lift.
Just my 2cents worth.....
I don't like to see anyone get hurt, or a even precious Beetle get demolished.
I saw a bug go airborne in Sacramento back in the '80's and it was not a pretty site

Ah ok..... I will do that... Canopy foam it is... ;)

Ya Scratchy , I guess \"wing\" is really the wrong term. Those lift figures really show how fast the lift will increase compared with speed.
