Title: COLLECTOR PLATES
Post by: BOINK on April 20, 2012, 07:28:55 PM
How much work can you do on a Beetle before you loose collector status.I realize you can't change stereo or wrong color but can you change the pans or motor if they are all correct vintage year replacement.

I've been through the process before and found it fairly straight forward.

Replacing your floor pan would not be an issue since vehicles are allowed to be restored.  I would suggest that a non stock colour would not be grounds for failure.  I have seen lots of beetles with collector plates and non stock colours.  Graphics might be another issue but in my opinion having a non stock colour would not be a guaranteed fail.

Again from having been through the process before some accessories that are "period correct" are allowed.  So depending on the year of the vehicle you might be able to have collectors insurance and have mag wheels, non original exhaust and maybe dual carbs.  It would be upto you to prove the parts were on the market place around the time your vehicle was new.  I know of a Karmann Ghia with ceramic coated header and dual exhaust that has collectors.  The owner of this particular car had received confirmation that in his case this was acceptable.

As with most insurance ICBC puts in enough small print to cover themselves incase you misrepresent the vehicle.  They base their decision on the photos you submit.  When I went through it no one from ICBC or my autoplan agent ever looked at the car in person or checked anything I submitted.   From talking to others who have been through the process this is the standard proceedure.

The reduced insurance cost is a nice benefit.
