was watching "how its made" yesterday cause they were showing a build on a lycoming (aircraft engine company) flat 4 engine. anyways, when they go to seal the case halves, they put down a thin coat of sealant then apply two strands of thread to act as a gasket, but there is no grooves like a vw engine. so, does anyone do this or tried it? i know that case seam is usually pretty safe from oil weepage, but every bit helps

I suspect most reputable builders know this trick. I watched my uncle do this when he rebuilt one of my dad's pizza delivery VW engines back when I was 14 or so.

It's got to be silk thread of a certain size I that can't recall right at the moment, I'll have to go to the shop and look, here's another option: http://hhh.gavilan.edu/hspenner/Main/Manuals/Ly-ConCaseORing.pdf
