Title: engine tin powder coat vs spray can
Post by: 72vwtype2 on February 02, 2012, 10:27:07 AM
My Type IV engine tin needs to be re-done. I will be having it media blasted soon, which will give me a nice clean surface to work with. Then what? What has been your experience with powder coating, spray can, Por 15, etc...

Any cost estimates with the method used would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Prob under $100 to powdercoating. It will be the best result, talk to Russ.

Well I'll throw a little sand in the Vaseline for this powdercoat love in
I agree powdercoat is the best but paint works fine too, I was in a panic once and used Tremclad directly on sandblasted tin, that was 10+ years ago and it still looks new today. The bus gets driven daily, even in the rain, but I do avoid salt. Carb cleaner and other solvents don't hurt it either. I did use the stuff in the can and put it on with a gun, the spraybomb stuff sucks.
Whatever you decide do a trial fit on all the tin first, type 4 tin gets mangled, it sticks out the sides of the engine and gets bashed when the engines out and often gets bent when someone attempts to remove a piece without dropping the engine, it also sometimes warps during blasting and even gets stepped on by the blaster occasionally. You don't want any gaps to leak air and powdercoat sometimes cracks when you straighten a piece after coating, get it all dialed in first.

Don't know anything about how well it works but KMS sells a powder coat diy kit. You bake it in an oven. Probably not one you plan to cook dinner in though. Nobody likes a powder coated roast.

A friend is considering powder coating his manifold and muffler, which I thought were two parts that were really best ceramic coated...  if you were going to make the effort. Would the coating likely burn off due to the heat?

Muffler  is a no no, heaterboxes are ok on the tin housing area but on the flange area it will burn off. The intake manifold if stock will burn off around the heat riser area. If its a manifold that has no exhaust contact like weber or Dellorto it will be fine.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will pass on the "easy bake" method at this time as the wife may not appreciate it. It appears as if powder coat is the method of choice. But I do like the the ten year tremclad method as well.

I have a good collection of Type 4 tin so I was able to put together a decent straight and complete set ready to go.

Anyone try Por 15 with success?

Thanks.
