Fun, but it still looks like a $2500 car with $10,000 worth of old four wheel drive stuff! ;)

You air cooled guys don't get out much.  That is a genuine Golf Country.  VW syncro drive train on a Mk2 body similar to what you see on early Passats.  They were never sold over here but a few have found their way here, nonetheless.  A couple have been for sale in the GVRD in the last few years, mostly from Japan but with LHD.  Selling prices seem to be around $10,000.

They are somewhat over rated in their 4X4 capability with no low range transfer case or bull low 1st gear like the syncro Vanagon's.  My 2000 Tracker with a proper 4WD system, will walk all over the Golf in the woods. It gets as good or better gas mileage and has a ton more room inside.  Note the spare tire had to come out of the trunk to make room for the gas tank that had to be moved to accommodate the rear axle.

Golf looks good, sort of, but with a suspension lift (using stock B3 parts) and limited slip/torsen diff., a FWD Golf is almost as capable, and for a lot less.

FYI.
