Title: Oil Leak At Rear Backing Plate

last year i noticed i was getting gear lube coming out the small hole on the rear of the backing plate.what is usally the problem relating too this.i have a new seal kit.is it usally something else or just the way i assembled it?

Hey Jim, sometimes after  you install new seals theres residual gear oil that comes out. But if it persists it may just be a bad seal. The oil dripping through the hole will indicate its passing the seal.

thanks alan ,i couldn't remember where that drain hole comes from .now that you mention seal it has jarred my memory.
thats great because i did not want too pull the whole plate off.the outer seal /bearing cover is way easier

You guys probably already do this , but I find it almost imposible to slip the bearing cover and seal over the end of the axle and then over the spacer/sleave on the axle with out kinking the seal over which of coarse you can't see and then you have a leak.  Instead I take the spacer/sleave off of the axle and place it into the seal first and then slip the whole cover/seal/spacer assembly over the axle knowing for sure I have'nt kinked the seal. Hope that helps someone some where.

well, took it apart and didn't notice a whole lot.maybe if a throw all new parts at it .it can't leak . right. we will see soon. after today pan is a roller!!!

You'll notice the O-rings in the kits.  Its extremely important that the groove that contains the O-ring is clean and that you use no gasket sealer.  Using gasket sealer will guarantee a leak.  I always inspect the quality of the O-rings.  The ones supplied in VW kits are usually of very poor quality, but usually work.  If they don't work, I try to get replacements from industrial supply stores.
