Well, having now fully stripped down and found all the hidden rust and accident repairs on my "not-so-secret, secret projeckt", I've determined it just isn't worth saving. Rob came by to assess the car as well...and we both agree that if it was an early, or a car with sentimental value, it *might* be worth it. But in this case, better to move on.
So here's what I'm looking for:
1st choice - 1971 or 1972 flat window super beetle.
2nd choice - 1969+ standard
3rd choice - 1973+ curved window super (man I hate that dash...)
Regardless of year, it has to be a hard top with no sunroof.
In an ideal world, I find someone's stalled project where the body is good but the rest is missing or needing work. Going to hold out until I find "the right one", but keep your ears and eyes open!

yeah, pretty much ended up as poor timing. When we spoke on the phone I was still thinking the one I have would be worth saving, but a lot of work. Since you sold yours I've determined mine is simply a good donor for some commonly rusted sections :P

No idea what you're talking about...
- There's the '69 beetle (test bed, being decommissioned when the new project is ready)
- The not-so-secret Super Beetle Project (Current money and time pit)
- The '75 Beetle (perpetual restoration which is actually just storage…see above two vehicles to understand why I have no money for it)
- The '83 Porsche 944 (Fun toy, no money being spent on it…when it blows up, it gets parted)
- The '95 Ford F150 - Shuttle truck, needs nothing besides oil and coolant occasionally. Hmmm, could use some shocks though.
That's all perfectly manageable.

Wow. Went and looked at a potential car yesterday. I'm usually quite good at weeding out the unsuitables over the phone and via email. Rarely do I ever screw up badly, but sometimes you can't be prepared for the things your told vs. the things you see.
"Rust free" means "I bought a can of spray paint at canadian tire and sprayed over it to make the rust go away".
A new carb does not mean "New Motor".
...And, if you offer to show me the photo album of all the body repairs and panel replacements...I suppose from now on I will ask the question "just so we're clear, those repairs aren't glaringly obvious on the car and so bad I can see them from three houses away?"
The search continues!!

I hear ya. You should see the '72 I've started. It's been butchered, has misc. little parts from at least 3 cars, 1 not even a vw, and as I've been tearing it apart I actually found some metal, and fiberglass, bondo, bits and pieces of this and that screwed on as "repair" panels, oh yes, and lots and lots of expanded foam. I figured as much, but the guy I got it from was all "it's a good car" and "I should have fixed this one instead of the '68". But that's the way it goes isn't it. As long as we're having fun it's all good. lol_hitting

Hey Dave,
I have a friend here whose father inlaw is selling his 74 standard beetle. I havent seen it but he says its in good shape. New pans, windsheild, bumbers, body is pretty solid. Interior is out of it as is engine. I havent seen it but sounds like it might be what you are looking for. You can call him. He can send you some pictures.
