Title: Back to life soon....7 years later
Post by: Billyisgr8 on May 26, 2011, 09:08:45 PM
Pulled  out from under a tarp in the yard.  My one daughter wants to be taken to grad in it, so am making it happen.  It should clean up great.  8 spoke rims and tires have been stored in the loft for a few years.  A squirrel did live in it for one winter before I found out what was happening and made a big mess of acorn shells, and pulled all the carpet from the package tray down and plundered all the backing for a nest, that is the worst of it.  Tried to start it tonight and spend an hour trying to figure out why it won't turn over when everything else is working, finally went to look at what possibly happened to the starter wiring under the car...... I forgot I took out the starter for another engine when I stored it...ooops, should have looked first and saved that hour.  Drove this car up here when we moved, started to run on 3 cylinders right before the insurance expired, parked it in june 2004, and it has been sitting ever since.   A good vacuum, wash/wax, check brakes,  install rims, headlights, and taillights ( which are on the Gaunch Launcher), and some new gas and should fire right up.

It is a 1972 superbeetle with a stock 1600dp.  It had a T4 in it in the pictures from before it was parked thats why the exhaust looks different.

Been driving it since the day after I posted pictures.  Oh so many memories in this car.  It just really needs a good buffing before the weekend.

I have to say that after getting the car back onto the road, I am still shocked that 7 year old gas will make a car run.  I never did put in new gas until after driving down the freeway and around the subdivisions for about 30 minutes first.  The car had 1/2 tank of gas in it.  The car started  and ran with 7 year old gas in the tank.  I am speechless, cause I was taught to change it out after sitting like this, this time I thought what the heck, worse case is I pump it later after I try to start it to see if I could save some time.

So why are we all changing out old gas from a car that sits for 1 winter?  ...I might have to change my opinion on old gas,... starting now.  I know in a high compression, performance oriented engine we are fighting for the last bit of anti knock ability and good burn.  But in a old 7:1 compression ( maybe less )engine that has had the gas sitting in open to free air( I didn't have the gas lid on, it was borrowed for the gaunch launcher), you would think the light vapours would have flashed off and left a very high flash point liquid in the tank that wouldn't want to start very easily......something to ponder for anyone with some old gas.  Still can't imagine ... why it still worked.

Anyway
My wife is very excited to drive her car again, it is nice to see it parked in the driveway.  We are really enjoying it.
