Title: 1969 Fuel Tank Venting - Correct setup?
Post by: owdlvr on February 09, 2011, 02:32:18 PM
Alright, I've searched the Samba (lots of 70+ emissions related posts), and DarrenE has scoured his original '69 as much as he could with kids biting at his ankles. We have yet to solve the question though!

My '69 has a Tee fitting near the fuel filler neck for a vent tube, and also a nipple on the driver's side of the tank. I'd like to setup the venting correctly, as I'm quite sure mine is not setup correctly.  Darren says his fuel-filler Tee has a line running up past the spring, across the bottom of the windshield and then down the driver's side of the trunk. Unfortunately we can't determine the end point since he's got a gas-heater in the way. Darren's D-side tank nipple is apparently vented to atmosphere through a line that exits the body.

At one point I vented my D-side tank nipple to atmosphere, and simply ended up with a large puddle of gas on the ground. It's currently just "capped off". My Fuel Inlet Tee fitting has simply been a line going up across the bottom of the windshield, down the trunk side and vented to atmosphere. The Bentley manual shows a completely different routing. The fuel-neck tee goes down to the P-side of the fuel tank and joins into what appears to be a larger size tube. This tube goes across the fuel tank and into a larger tank fitting using a special connection piece. Google and/or Samba search couldn't find any evidence of this system in real-life though.

So...I've got two tank nipples, a need to allow for temperature fluctuations and no idea how to correctly hook it up.

Thoughts?

I sent you an e-mail with pictures and an explanation.  Hope it helps.  Darren.
