Has anyone sold a car to the US without paper work.

When I sold my dormobile to someone in Minnesota, he said just drive it down to Seattle and I'll pick it up. I don't need any paperwork! After a few calls, I found that unless I "released" it, that anything done with it could be tracked back to me, and I might be liable somehow. I ended up getting the broker stuff done, at the buyers expense just to cover my ass.
