Title: clutch/pressure plate combo for 1200 bolted to IRS trans
Post by: Jeremy on December 21, 2010, 04:53:38 PM
So I've bought a running 1200cc engine to throw in the '59 to putt around in for now. (Emphasis on putt) The question I have is since I've converted it to IRS do I have to change the pressure plate and throw out bearing or can I bolt the engine right up and let er fly? (Other than using a 6v starter and a 12 generator and coil)

Depends on what your throwout bearing looks like, does it ride on a sleeve that surrounds the input shaft or just hang on the release levers? If it doesn't have the sleeve the pressure plate needs the ring in the center.

Thanks for the reply BUSSDADDY. The throw out bearing rides on the sleeve. Can I remove the ring on the PP? If not can I remove the sleeve?

Remove the ring on the Pressure plate if you can. Im not too sure if those ones will come apart

Thanks Bruce. I'm out of town so can't run into the shop to take a look but I do remember looking at it and wondering how to take the ring off if I had to. Maybe I could trim the TO bearing sleeve to make it work.

The sleeve in the bellhousing unbolts, but then you'll need the early TO bearing, flip a coin, change the bearing or change/modify the PP.
That ring comes out of most of the diaphram style PP's I've seen, it's a big flat pressed on circlip inside that has to come off, wear goggles while you pry as the clip shatters sometimes ;)

If you go this route you will also need to change the cross shaft! It makes it a little more work.

Sorry. Which route are you talking. Replace the TO bearing or PP ring.

Oooops, Geoff's right, if you remove the sleeve and change the TO bearing the cross shaft is different too, the simple fix is pry the ring out of the PP and go for a drive :D

Thanks guys. All cleared up. Going for a drive sounds great. It's about time I think. Only been 20 years since  I drove this beater .
