Also, what heads are on it.

What are you going to do with the car?  Drag racing with slicks?

vw guy built it and told me the only mods on it are the carbs( dual kads) and the exhaust, other than that I'm guessing everything else is stock.

easy yo get more horse power, 1st give it a tune up that can add 7-10 hp, then u can put a stinker exhaust or straight pipe it, then u cen put hot plug in but risk breakign some things, then u can put a super chrager and then the rest is pretty much internal of then egine ,up graded cam lifters  valves ect ect

it would not be much of a race if your engine still runs backwards as per your most recent help post.as for the og post other than some ratio rockers there is not much more for bolt on hp. 1776 is a nice easy to maintain engine. ie less dollars spent, more time driving.bigger engines bigger heartaches, if you can not do all the work yourself. there is no such thing as a $500.00, 150 hp motor for sale used or new. just my 2cents ;)

There are actually a lot of options out there for you. You could try this modification.

Hey Krammit you can add a set of street style 1.25:1 ratio rockers and a heavy pulley. This will give you more bottom end torque (drivability). These can be transferred easily to a 1914cc later.

A capacitive discharge ignition will add to the combo as well. Something like an MSD 6 with multiple capacitive discharge really helps with bottom end, emmisions and drivability and can be used on any size engine.

I bet those carbs could use setting and jetting as well! That always helps.

Gary.

I use Stock CV's in my rail I clearanced a bit for a little more travel. They were used when I pput them in and now their used and abused Just ask GMB!  :DI have a 1914 (going 2275 I now have all the parts for) I've pulled S@#t loads of stuff out of some crazy places, CJ's, SUV's and touch wood all has been good!

My stock cv's that were also used,  were good to high 11's in the 1/4 running slicks.  Once I was running deep 11's then they were breaking every other run.  So I would say you are good up to 180 hp using type 1 cv's.
