A few weeks ago when I went to West Van I noticed the Capilano bridge had been moved the night before, I was curious to see how it was done and just saw this.
Kind of a cool video. Make sure to look at both.

cool !!.. why the move?

They are replacing the westbound truss bridge, the old bridge was shifted over to allow for a temporary detour, allowing for a new bridge to be constructed on the exisitng westbound alignment.
In typical logical gov't thinking, the eastbound structure also requires replacement. However, the detour is scheduled to come out prior to rebuilding the eastbound bridge. I priced the project, but wasn't low bidder!
If interested, the work including shifting the bridge and rebuilding the westbound bridge is approx. $11m

how much more would they have saved by doing both sides at the same time? How did the physically move the bridge (or was it capable of moving all ready)?

That is great to watch, if anyone is interested you can check out the work on the new Port Mann bridge with the EarthCams as well, just go to EarthCam Port Mann bridge for the latest look. Also check out the gantry crane its impressive as each segment that it puts into place weighs around 175000 lbs! The company that I work for is supplying the concrete so thats why I have no time to work or play with my cars. Have to start working on that work life balance!
