Title: wtb: generator for 1200
Post by: iceneweb on August 21, 2010, 11:06:45 PM
Hi All, I'm in Van for the weekend and have a non charging engine. The battery voltage is around 12 v with the engine off and doesn't change with the engine on. So, I may need an alternator tomorrow just so as I can get back to White Rock. Anyone have a spare one kicking around?

Mark

Sorry, I meant generator not alternator.
Hopefully my battery will get me back to WR.

Will do some tests at the end of my shift here at Granvile Island and make sure its not the regulator at fault

While still in Van I was able to follow the fault finding instructions on this site:
http://www.vw-resource.com/generator.html

I went thru all the steps, but it was reenergising the field that did it.

So I'm back in business :)

Thanks all,
Mark

The genny light came on again on the way home, so I'll be giving you a call, Ace. Thx.

So you're sure all the wires are good and not broken internally and the gen and reg are grounding properly to the bus and each other? And that the regulator isn't to blame? Done all of the on car tests described in the Bentley manual?

Just wanted to check because a generator swap is a fairly involved job in a bus so you'd want to be sure it was the issue first. ;)

Hi Mark, No I'm not totally convinced its the genny yet, so now that I have it home I will be going through all the tests.

And yes, after a brief glance at the way its set up it looks like a real pain to change.

Cheers!

Well . . . . there was nothing wrong with the generator or regulator. When I installed an engine bay light, I drilled a hole in on of the big tabs on the regulator for power, but the screw I used was just long enough to contact another (out of sight) tab behind it . . . . I wondered why my charging problems only started after the engine-bay light had been installed  ;)
