Title: Trouble getting engine running
Post by: EricJr on June 04, 2010, 11:17:39 PM
I have a 1915cc that i had running for about a month. I drove it out to White Rock one afternoon and on the way it backfired a few times and died. It would turn over but not start. Found there was no spark. I have replaced the coil with a new blue coil, new compufire electronic points and a new alternator with built in regulator and I now have spark but it just wont fire up. I have static timed it to TDC on number one but nothing seams to work. I pulled the distibutor and the drive gear doesn't line up the way it is supposed to, prob 30 deg off but i adjusted the dist to allow for this. I was getting some backfire through the carbs but now nothing. Anybody have any ideas?

No vacuum and yes, its got gas. I detached the fuel line and cranked it over because it seamed to be flooded. Now I get alot of back fire through the carb so I figured the timing was out. Once again I static timed it but still won't fire. If anybody lives close to coquitlam and has an hour or so to come by and have a look I would appreciate it. Its pissing me off, all these sunny days and I can't drive it!

Sounds like your timing for a stock distributor and are not using a stock one. You need to get the numbers off the distributor and post them then more info can be provided.

The distributor doesn't have any markings or numbers. I worked on it on Saturday and its cranking over but backfiring like crazy and still wont start. I cranked it over while turning the distributor to check if it was out but still couldn't make any progress.

Just where are you at? sounds like you need to stock the fridge and have someone come visit.

I need help! Is there anyone that can come by for an hour or so and have a look? I didn't want to go through the hassle of having it towed somewhere. Does anybody know of a good vw shop in tri-cities or have a suggestion on where I should take it?
