Title: Doh! Guess the Bug isn't happy - Now with engine teardown shots
Post by: owdlvr on December 02, 2009, 10:02:33 AM
It's a nice sunny, clear day. The highway is salt free to Brandywine...really, how much could it hurt to take the bug?

Apparently the bug didn't feel the same way.

That's just 20min of sitting.

'tis but a scratch!

i had severe oil leaks on my 1641 and figured it was the crank pulley and oil cooler seals until my bro pointed out that my oil breather line was kinked. i guess the engine started  making its own positive ventilation.

Haven't had a chance to actually check this out, but need to in the next 40min before we lose light. The bug has been sitting in the Fairmont Hotel Parking lot all day  ;D

I took a quick look this morning when I took the photos, and it develops a small drip once every 10-15sec, which comes off the side of my oil sump. Pushrod tubes are wet (but the whole left side is!) and engine tin is dry. Will take a quick look, top the oil up and check it at the south end of town. Art and I have priced out the new 1776, so all I really need to do is get the car home tonight and to the DVKK Xmas party on saturday. Otherwise I'll drive the 4Runner ;-)

Will report once I get to Squamish...if I get to Squamish!

Have you had a visual of your push rod tubes (the doughnuts)?

Made it home, 2qts later.

Based on the oil flow I'm thinking pushrod tubes, but things were definitely getting worse by the time I made it into squamish. Exhaust leak that _appears_ to be coming from between the head and cylinders. Hoping I didn't wreck the head, not betting on it. Kinda have enough spare bits in the garage that it shouldn't matter a whole lot.

just moved the '75 out of the garage, and pulled the '69 in. Photos before bed :P

Well, rolled it into the garage at 8pm tonight...

And had the motor out by 10. Not too shabby for my second engine pull, considering I had to wait for a buddy to drive over to help me pull the motor off the jack...but Dad says he gets 'em out in 35min, so I have a long way to go! I suppose it would also help if I actually consulted my Bentley, would have remembered where the lower bolts were a heck of a lot faster!

...now, in my haste to yank the engine tonight I did manage to forget one important step - drain the oil! Trevor, the buddy who drove over to help me for a moment, reminded me that there probably isn't much left :)  Hmmm...how to drain the oil?  Answer - Hole saw:

Tomorrow evening/night I'll start stripping it down to find the problem. I mean, I have to have it together by 6pm on Saturday!

And the tear down...

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.static.flickr.com%2F2693%2F4156738669_3564ae3ff9.jpg&hash=3c00fa138755cb7a18dbd105cd94d48ff62bdd3c)
This one scared me at first, the metal bit on the right was stuck to the magnetic drain plug. Took me a while, but I think it's the rivet off the oil screen. With the way the engine is sitting at the moment, I can't pop the screen out to see what's going on.

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.static.flickr.com%2F2631%2F4156738575_7bcbcfc287.jpg&hash=2280bb9a1cfa4af1d53685e83dc4a1a10332576e)  (https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.static.flickr.com%2F2756%2F4156738505_1d96b1e3b2.jpg&hash=e22f4664792a7c358007a1393d643be081aafa5c)

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.static.flickr.com%2F2533%2F4157498462_736bd56960.jpg&hash=aea2f33e82c2f434cf5fb6755923d93583c0dc49) (https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.static.flickr.com%2F2504%2F4156737781_c31761c935.jpg&hash=72e734a555e949f963d6933bae4dca8e05232b28)
So the pushrod seals on the one side were super wet, lots of oil. Crank pulley had no signs of oil, and the area was dry. Top of the case makes me think there could be oil-cooler seal issues too.

And now the fun...

That ain't greasy dirt...that's aluminum. (p.s. nice cracks!)

So, thoughts?  I'm likely taking the 4Runner to the DVKK Xmas party, but I have to be honest...I'm tempted to just button 'er back up for the Xmas party and then focus on building the new mill. Driver's side head definitely wasn't torqued down properly. I've put 50,000 miles on the engine, and who knows how many before I bought it. Worst part is I could have caught it when the exhaust note changed. I thought I had a pretty rusty heaterbox/Jtube on the Driver's side, so I mostly ignored it. Lesson learned!

Sure, just butten her tight and let it fly! heads are fubared for performace but you can just run er on a stk no hope motor.
If you just want to make the christmas party, do it but you need a fresher motor i would say!! O0

I might be making the Xmas party in a proper vehicle after all...It would be in right now, if any of my darned friends were around to lift it off the table! We shall see tomorrow if it runs!

Sweet surprise I found though. Turns out the motor came with a Scat Welded fan installed. This, along with the leftover rear sway bar mounts (but no sway bar), lead me to believe the car lead just as hard a life before me!
