Title: same planet, different worlds?
Post by: beetlemandan on September 12, 2009, 08:47:56 PM
ok, i'm not braggin here, but at the gcvws, there was practically a line up to take pictures of my bug and my pinstriping. today at the "endless summer" show here in summerland, there was 2 other vw's ( a 65 bus and a 59 bug, both very cool). anyways, most people tell me how they had a beetle in the 60's, the other half ask me "is that the original motor?" , to which i'm forced to grit my teeth and NOT reply " when the hell did a vw come with a metallic orange engine with twin carbs, (asshole)? the real icing on the cake is one guy telling me if i really want power, to put a toranado motor/transaxle in it, then the other goof asks me where he can get a good beetle for under 500 bucks to stuff a 427 in the back.

does anyone else have these problems?

It all depends of what you want.

Nothing alse matters.

Once you go big,
you want to go bigger.

Reality, at 3000 rpms you may do 50 Mph or 70 Mpr ... anything about that cost money and them some. :D

My two bits

I have similar issues if you mean frustrating comments from people who think they know what they're talking about, but are completely clueless. But my questions are usually not about motor. More like "when are you going to paint it?", "now all it needs is a paint job", and "what colour are you going to paint it?". To all of which I kindly reply "it already is painted". No love for patina in this world!

I know exactly what you guys mean. It doesnt bother me though, you cant expect everyone to know everything about every car. Im pretty well versed in the car world, and i still learn new things all the time.

One story i have is i was importing my 1983 Audi Quattro into canada in October.

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi233.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee52%2Fshiningprojects%2FWaterwerks2009-153.jpg&hash=0aad3b5494003c92076bd96537a9304e3e373868)

So i get to the border and i explain to the customs officer that the car is exempt from duty as its 25 years old.
The 2 guys look at me and say that is only for collectible or classic cars, not some old audi.

Little do they know that my audi is a very special car, only 99 ever sold in canada and all hand built on a
special production line in germany. First sports car ever with AWD, first Turbo car with AWD. Anyways,
these cars are rare and far between and highly collectible.

I also get alot of people who come up and say they like my Scirocco. But again, you cant expect everyone to know.

I seem to have similar interactions every time I pull into a gas station\parking lot etc.

One of my favorites:
Pull into a gas station in my 58 Kombi, lady approaches me...
She says, "I absolutely love your beetle bug!"
Huh what? She can't be talking to me.
My jaw hits the ground I'm sure...
I couldn't help but let out an auditable laugh because I didn't know what to say.
... heh thanks, I'm still laughing ;)

Haha, I've got that before too, calling it a beetle bug. I'm driving a bloody squareback. Is beetle bug generic for any old VW? Haha

Hey whats wrong with calling a beetle a beetle bug?  All my girls call our bugs (we have 3) beetle bugs. They even made up a song of our blue super when they were just little.  I think it's cute. It goes like this ...Daisey...Daisey......haha I won't type it out.

For the most part I think it is neat when anybody shows intrest in our old beetles, but you do get some complete moron who thinks they know it all once in awhile.

Years ago at the Ford dealer buying some indestructible Ford Belts for my car, the guy asked what kind of Ford I had.  I told him it was not for any Ford, but for my Beetle.  Then he asks me what kind of Beetle it was.  Puzzled, I said there's only one kind.  He then said no, there's a Beetle car, a Beetle Van, a Beetle station wagon, ........ ??? ::)

My favourite is when someone says "you should put a Porsche engine in the back of your VW"
To which I reply "but why would I want to go slower?"

Pulled up to the gas station in my friends all original 15 window bus. Some guy came out to comment on it. Started telling us how he use to own a 17 window bus. After that the conversation went down hill pretty fast. ::)

HaHa I get that question all the time when driving my Thing.  I've also been asked if it's "home made" more than a few times.

Did you convert that bus into a pickup yourself?

 :D nother good one!

I guess I do kinda cringe sometimes when someone pulls up next to us at a light and says "Hey what is that THING?" I hear it far too often to be amused, but people always seem amused by themselves askin it ::)
