i've seen type 4/ pancake powerplants in lots of rails/dune buggys. yes, they do work, but i wouldn't reccomend it for serious off-road because of the excess weight, large overhang of the fan shroud and the exhaust goes straight down. i've forced very tired single ports up some really steep hills, so don't think that extra "power" is worth it

The 1972 vans came with the 1.7L type 4 motor, but a 2L will fit. Not sure how the type 4 motors work in a dune buggy. Good luck.

Thanks for the tips :) Is it possible to convert the 2L to a bug style ? Upright shrouds , regular exhausts??? ???

Found a few sites on the web can be done with kits and mods.
  Thanks again

i've seen the upright shrouds done lots, you're out of luck on changing the exhaust ports unless you want to pay some machinist big coin to change it from a cross flow head to a bug/vanagon style head
