Ok.. Autoplan isn't giving me straight answers..
What are the general rules about towing a car (not on a trailer)... in BC.

throw a permit on it and go, its not a trailer its a car.

It won't be registered yet.. cant get a permit. I've gotten different Autoplan answers. ^-^ One said I could get a binder.. one said bridging.. Why cant it be clear?

When I towed it from the ladies house.. she had called her friend.. who's hubby was a cop. He said I was covered in Washington by the insurance on the vehicle that was towing it.. I suppose I can check when I get back down there.

I called Washinton State Patrol, they said I needed a permit. I talked to ICBC, they said when I got into Canada, to stop, go to the nearest Autoplan and get a permit. ;) I considered taking plates off my other vehicle, as I always thought you had 10 days to transfer plates from another vehicle? (or borrow a repairman plate from someone)

I just imported my Bus from Oregon. I got the binder insurance from ICBC that I used to get the permit from Oregon. So, basically Oregon "plate" with BC insurance. Full coverage insurance was just over $40 and it's valid for 10 days. I don't know how it is in Washington but in Oregon, you have to have a proof of insurance to get the permit for the vehicle... US$20 and once you get it it's valid for 21 days! :o

get a trailer and don't have any other hassels.

Get an APV380. Thats all you should need and should cover your tow home.
BTW your jetta is a Mk2 not a Mk1.

And I got a binder to insure the car while on the truck, for fire and theft and if it rolled off the truck and hit someone, I would have my insurance, as well as the "truck" insurance. Then to tow it from bellingham, they wanted the Washington State and BC permit while towed. Do it how you please, as long as you can live with the consequences if there's any problems. $20 is cheap insurance against a problem like a wheel falling off!
I was able to get permits to move the car because I had registered it in BC, to be able to get it back and forth from the shop where they were doing the safety inspection, 6 months after I crossed the border with it.

How did you register it in BC before it was inspected? Is this something new?

Not sure about Canada, but in WA I am 99% sure you need a permit to tow.

I got a binder of insurance.. 31 days for 86.00... Covers the next month.. anytime being towed, when it's being stored.. (stolen, catches fire, etc)
.. She also informed me when I need an A-B for the shop, inspection, etc.. I can go in an get a permit. I have a limited amount of times in the next month I can get it and it's included in this price.

I'm pretty sure I had to register it before they'd give me a permit? BUT... I just called the local insurance place and they won't register it until the inspection is done. No exceptions.
With the new Harmonized tax coming in, I asked how the value for the tax was calculated, as when i brought the car up, the u.s. dollar was 87 cents, today at 92 cents I thought it's value is less in Canadian. They said that the value is based on the GST paid at that time, not todays value. WFT? When I got U.S. dollars I bought at 90 cents, good for me cause when i picked up the car, the canuck buck had dropped, but made more GST. I guess it can be valued for more, and on the other side if the canadian dollar went to fifty cents, I'd only have to pay the rate for the value of when I crossed the border. I said I had already paid GST, with the new tax I won't have to pay it again will I? She wasn't sure, so there's extra incentive to get it on the road before July 1 next year!

Got a 31 day binder on it. Agent informed me that anytime within that period I can pop in for an A-B to get to the shop for repairs, inspection, etc.. and it's included in the 86.00 I paid :)
Binder without the daily permit additions covers fire, theft, falling off the hitch.. everything but someone driving it. I even asked her if it caught fire while welding.. covered.. HAHA
I like this agent.. I may marry her. :D
