Title: Opinions wanted
Post by: Airjack on June 04, 2009, 11:59:09 PM

I'm sure I saw somewhere on this forum that if you register your vehicle in the X region (or?) you won't have to air-care. Is this true, anyone??

Also, I'm registering a DC , Should it be as a van or pick-up ?

Thanks for your help. ;D

It's a pick up or truck.

As for territory Z you have to prove you live there and if you are found to be lying they can void your whole policy, that could be messy. Aircare isn't a challenge for a healthy engine.

Don't mess with it! Get the vehicle insured properly. If you get in an accident do you really want to take a chance on null and void insurance and being liable for others damage?

I know of a couple of S-10's around that have bypassed Aircare.
One is registered in Territory X which covers all of BC. I believe this is for vehicles that are used not just in Greater Vancouver but equally though out the province.
The second raised the GVW to 3/4 Ton (or greater) as commercial vehicles do not need Aircare.
Whether or not ICBC will honor any claims may be questionable tho. :police:

It is my belief that territory Z insurance is for those that work or spend most of their time with the vehicle out of the lower mainland, province, or even country.  For those who maintain a permanent residence in the lower mainland, but spend more time away with the vehicle afaik.  You get a ticket in the jurisdiction...you get a letter.  You get into an accident, your insurance is void, unless you can prove in court that it was during one of those 'rare' occasions that you were at home.

The weight exemption is 5001 KG, good luck getting that by an agent when the curb weight is 1250 KG. Slightly above 5001 is commercial, still no aircare but you have to stop at every scale and carry placards for all your cargo as well as submit to any roadside inspection. Standing in the little booth for 3 minutes and watching some knuckledragger abuse your bus doesn't sound so bad now, does it?

When I had my 89 GMC 1 ton I looked in to  bumping up the GVW  My insurance company told me that you now become commercial and are required to get a yearly safety inspection.

I think that for a few hundred well placed dollars, and probably much less depending on the condition of your engine, you should be able to pass aircare.
